Register Herald Obituaries for September 5, 1999 Joseph C. Bennett Joseph C. Bennett, 53, of Plumley Mountain, died Thursday, Sept. 2, 1999, at home. Born March 7, 1946, in Rupert, he was the son of the late Noah Bennett and Dorothy Bennett. Mr. Bennett was a lifelong resident of Raleigh County and was employed with Aspen for 20 years. He enjoyed playing gospel music and working on the farm. Survivors include his wife, Brinda Bennett; two sons, Michael Bennett and his wife, Christy, and Adam Bennett, all of Grandview; a daughter, Theresa Blevins and her husband, Dusty, of Dobson, N.C.; two stepsons, Robert Plumley and Ronnie Plumley and his wife, Kim, all of Plumley Mountain; three grandchildren, Buddy Brammer and Buck Blevins, both of Dobson, and Mikey Bennett of Grandview; a stepgranddaughter, Kayla Plumley of Plumley Mountain; two sisters, Virgie Bennett and her husband, Richard, of Shady Spring, and Nora Adkins and her husband, Roger, of Grandview; two brothers, Harold Bennett and his wife, Gracie, of Shady Spring and Delbert Bennett and his wife, Helen, of Dobson; and many other family and friends. Friends and family will serve as pallbearers. Arrangements are incomplete and will be announced by Rose and Quesenberry Funeral Home, Beckley. Dorothy Alice Goodson Dorothy Alice Goodson, 58, of Hughes Road, Daniels, died Friday, Sept. 3, 1999, in a Beckley hospital following a short illness. Born Nov. 7, 1940, in Blue Jay, she was the daughter of the late Benny Lilly and Gladys Smith Lilly. Mrs. Goodson was a homemaker and a member of Daniels Wesleyan Church. She had been a resident of Daniels most of her life. She was preceded in death by her husband, Jiles C. Goodson, on March 12, 1981; two brothers, John Harold Lilly and Gary Winfred Lilly; and a sister, Thelma Gladys Tribbet. Survivors include a brother, Lacy Edward Lilly and his wife, Carol, of Beaver; two sisters, Betty Lou Vest and her husband, Ordie, of Mabscott and Loretta Lilly and her husband, Kenneth, of Daniels; and several nieces and nephews. Services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at Daniels Wesleyan Church with Pastor Dean Adams and the Rev. John Richmond officiating. Burial will follow in Goodson Cemetery No. 2, Bragg. Isaac Green DAYTON, Ohio - Isaac "Ike" Green, 94, formerly of Raleigh, died Wednesday, Sept. 1, 1999, in a Dayton hospital following a long illness. Born Sept. 25, 1904, in Bessemer, Ala., he was the son of the late John Henry Green and Ollie Mae Stokes Green. Mr. Green was the first member of Mount Zion Baptist Church, Beckley. He was retired from Slab Fork Coal Co. and a member of the UMWA. He had been a resident of Raleigh for 75 years before moving to Dayton. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Rosa Green; his second wife, Geraldine Green, on June 4, 1998; a daughter, Ollie Mae Penn; two granddaughters; and a grandson. Survivors include three sons, John T. Green and his wife, Kate, of Georgia, Ulysses Green and his wife, Martha, of Dayton, with whom he resided, and Cornelius Green of Raleigh; a stepson, Nelson "Rocky" Ross of Beckley; a daughter, Isaacetta "Nikki" Green of Cleveland; twostep daughters, Shirley D. Ross of El Paso, Texas, and Debbie I. Walton of Beckley; and a host of grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Services will be 1 p.m. Tuesday at House of Wheat Funeral Home, 2107 N. Harry Lee Gwinn MEADOW BRIDGE - Harry Lee Gwinn, 58, died Friday, Sept. 3, 1999, in a Beckley hospital following a short illness. Born Jan. 21, 1941, in Hinton, he was the son of the late Russell and Marie Slayton Gwinn. Mr. Gwinn was formerly employed by General Motors Corp. of Michigan. He was preceded in death by four brothers, Lomis, Clifton, Howard and Russell Jr. Gwinn. Survivors include two sisters, Phyllis Thompson of Carpentersville, Ill., and Sylvia Shaffer of Meadow Bridge; four brothers, Arnold Gwinn and his wife, Aleta, of Chesterfield County, Va., Larry Gwinn of Meadow Bridge, Donald Gwinn and his wife, Jewell, of Lockbridge and Jerry Gwinn and his wife, Beatrice "Bea," of Olive Hill, Ky.; and several nieces and nephews. Services will be 11 a.m. Monday at Smathers Funeral Chapel, Rainelle, with the Rev. Carl Whittaker officiating. Burial will follow in Patton Memorial Cemetery, Meadow Bridge. Frances Louise Lilly Frances Louise Meadows Lilly, 71, of Midway, died Saturday, Sept. 4, 1999, at her residence of natural causes. Born Sept. 23, 1927, in McAlpin, she was the daughter of the late Ray H. and Vera G. Meadows. Mrs. Lilly was graduate of Mark Twain High School. She previously worked for Mountaineer Family Health Plan, Raleigh County Health Department and Belk Department Store. She helped start the first Girl Scout troop in Midway and was a scout leader for many years. She was a past member of the American Dental Society. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Carmen D. Schulte; and three brothers, Ray H. Meadows Jr., Douglas H. Meadows and Jack Meadows. Survivors include her husband, Clifton E. Lilly; a daughter, Karen Christie of Beckley; a son, Richard E. Lilly of Midway; two brothers, Arnold Meadows of Daniels and Jimmy Meadows of Columbia, Ga.; six sisters, Dorothy Testerman of Sophia, Betty Wood of Huntington, Shirley Eisenhardt of Baltimore, Phyllis Cox of Coal City, Janet Zachary of Baltimore and Sue Campbell of Crab Orchard; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Graveside rites and burial will be 2 p.m. today at Sunset Memorial Park, Beckley, with the Rev. W.C. Combs officiating. There will be no visitation. Arrangements by Calfee Funeral Home, Beckley. Justin C. Whitten CROSS LANES - Justin C. Whitten, 82, died Thursday, Sept. 2, 1999, in a Hurricane nursing center following a long illness. Mr. Whitten was a retired store room worker, formerly employed by E.I. DuPont of Belle. He was a member of Fayetteville Baptist Church, Salina Lodge AF-AM and the American Legion. Mr. Whitten was also a pharmacist first class in the U.S. Navy serving during World War II and the Korean War. Mr. Whitten was a native of Hinton, but he had also resided in Belle and Fayetteville. Survivors include his wife, Virginia Whitten; two daughters, Mitzie Chancey of Palm City, Fla., and Sara Jane Scites of Cross Lanes; a son, Michael Whitten of Melbourne, Fla.; four brothers, Hershel Whitten of Rockledge, Fla., Vernon Whitten of Pensacola, Fla., Thomas Whitten of Piney View and David Whitten of Nashville, Tenn.; 11 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. Services will be 2 p.m. today at Fidler and Frame Funeral Home, Belle, with the Rev. Kent Spann officiating. Burial will follow in High Lawn Memorial Park, Oak Hill.
