Born in Maben, he was the son of the late Burb and Lula Bailey. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Bill and Dick Bailey. Survivors include his wife, Marjorie Bailey of Massachusetts; a sister, Berona Smith of Beckley; and a brother, Donnie Bailey of Crab Orchard. Services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday in Attleboro, Mass. Lewis Wilson Ballard FAYETTEVILLE ­ Lewis Wilson "Lew" Ballard, 74, died Sunday, Sept. 5, 1999, at a Beckley hospital following a long illness. Born Nov. 10, 1924, in Glen Jean, he was the son of the late William R. and Sarah Blanche Bannister Ballard. Mr. Ballard was a retired school principal from Collins Middle School with 32 years of service with the same school. He was a member of Fayetteville Baptist Church, Fayetteville, Oak Hill VFW Post 3110, and a member of W.Va. Retired Teachers Association. He was a graduate of Concord College and had a master's from West Virginia University. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and fought in five major battles with General Patton's 3rd Army including the Normandy Invasion. He was preceded in death by three brothers, George, Oscar and Bill Ballard; and a sister, Hope Caldwell. Survivors include his wife, Nina Sizemore Ballard of Fayetteville; a stepdaughter, Deborah W. Bennett and husband, Dwight "Rick" of Shady Spring; a stepgrandson, Patrick Lewis Bennett of Shady Spring; a stepgranddaughter, Sarah Beth Bennett of Shady Spring; three sisters, Sally Arritt of Fayetteville, Katherine Anderson of Bluff City, Tenn., and Elizabeth Stone of St. Albans; and 18 nieces and nephews. Services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Oak Hill United Methodist Church with the Rev. James Shepherd officiating. Burial will follow in Highlawn Memorial Park, Oak Hill. Garten RUPERT ­ The Rev. Ray B. Garten, 85, died Sunday, Sept. 5, 1999, in a Beckley hospital following a short illness. Born Feb. 11,1914, in Summers County, he was the son of the late Alice Hogan and Elijah Joseph Garten. The Rev. Garten was the former pastor of Alderson Church of God, a member of the Rupert Church of God, a former yardman for Meadow River Lumber Co. and a U.S. Army WW II veteran. He was preceded in death by five sisters, Mabel Wheeler, Della Persinger, Gladys Meadows, Glenna Garten, and an infant sister, Dessie Garten; eight brothers, Roy, Eldridge, Walter, Carl, Rev. L.A., Howard, Earl and Buren Garten; and a grandson, Daniel Brandon Chamberlain. Survivors include his wife, Ida Lee Raines Garten of Rupert; two daughters, Drema Martin and husband Junior and Devena Patton and husband Robert all of Rupert; a son, Ronald Garten and wife Beverly of Richlands, N.C.; four grandsons, Ronald Garten Jr., Jason Garten, Matthew Garten and Christopher Garten; four granddaughters, Kimberly Shawver, Serita Patton, Donna Patton and Melissa Patton; and a great-granddaughter, Cierra Shawver. Sidney Marie Harrison Sidney Marie McCoy Harrison, 76, of Beckley, died Sunday, Sept. 5, 1999, in a local hospital of natural causes. Born Jan. 5, 1923, in Thomas, Ky., she was the daughter of the late Joseph and Maggie McCoy. Mrs. Harrison was a former fashion floor manager of Montgomery Ward, was of the Missionary Baptist faith and had been a resident of Raleigh County for the past 45 years. She was preceded in death by her husband, Russell H. Harrison; and by one sister, Irene Crider. Survivors include two sisters, Joavenell McCoy of Montgomery, Ala., and Iona Copley of Forrest Hill, Ky.; 16 nieces and nephews, 25 great-nieces and great-nephews and several great-great-nieces and great-great-nephews. Alva Lucille Huffman Alva Lucille Croy Bostic Huffman, 78, of Wolf Creek, died Sunday, Sept. 5, 1999, in a Fairlea nursing center following a long illness. Born Feb. 15, 1921, at Ronceverte, she was the daughter of the late Arthur B. and A. Inez Harris Croy. Mrs. Huffman was the former owner and bookkeeper of Bostic Oil Co., Alderson, having retired after 17 years of service. She was a 1940 graduate of Alderson High School and a member of the Broad Run Baptist Church, Wolf Creek. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Clarence A. "Shorty" Bostic; and two brothers, Melvin and Curtis Croy. Survivors include her husband, Harry M. Huffman of Wolf Creek; a son, Wayne A. Bostic and wife Nancy V. of Union; a daughter, Ruth V. Phillips and husband James B. of Aberdeen, Md.; four grandsons, Aaron Bostic of Union, David Phillips and wife Crystal of Port Deposit, Md., Brian Phillips and Scott Phillips both of Aberdeen, Md.; two stepchildren, Bill Huffman and wife Phyllis and Kay Mitchell and husband Pat all of Lynchburg, Va.; five stepgrandchildren; seven stepgreat-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Overby, 75, of Huntington, passed away Sunday, Sept. 5, 1999, in a Huntington hospital. Born Oct. 11, 1923, in Slab Fork, she was the daughter of the late George William and Cora Cobb Johnson Thurbon. Mrs. Overby was a retired employee of the Coca-Cola Bottling Co. of Huntington. She was a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps, having served during World War II. She was a 1941 graduate of Woodrow Wilson High School of Beckley and a 1951 graduate of Marshall University. She was a member of DAV Chapter 2 of Huntington, where she was a volunteer driver for veterans, American Legion Post No. 16 of Huntington, Howard P. Hall VFW Post No. 1064 of Huntington, Veterans for Civic Improvement, Marine Corps League and the Waves. She was also a member of the Tri-State Amateur Radio Association and a lifetime member of the Moose Lodge. She was preceded in death by her husband, Jimmy Owen Overby; and two brothers, Woodrow Johnson and Franklin Thurbon. Survivors include two sons, George William Overby and wife Debbie Brown of Atlanta, Ga., and Jimmy L. Overby of Huntington; a daughter, Ruth Ann Overby Lynch and husband Mike Lynch of Vienna; a grandson, Andy Lynch of Vienna; two brothers, William Thurbon and wife Louise of Florida and G.W. Thurbon and wife Shirley Mitchem of Crab Orchard; two sisters, Almeta Collins of Portsmouth, Va., and Nancy Pat and husband Don Carpenter of Statesville, N.C.
