Register Herald Obituaries for September 13, 1999 Irene M. Campbell UNION ­ Irene M. Campbell, 81, of Union, passed away Saturday, Sept. 11, 1999, peacefully in her sleep at her home. Mrs. Campbell was born at Zenith on Sept. 2, 1918, a daughter of the late Jabe and Minnie Crosier McPeak. She was the former owner of Campbell's Greenhouse and The Red Barn Craft Shop in Union and served as the coordinator of the Retired Senior Volunteer Program in Monroe County. She was a member of the Union United Methodist Church at Union and was an avid gardener who enjoyed being outside in her yard and garden. Mrs. Campbell was preceded in death by her husband, John M. Campbell, Oct. 8, 1975; and by one daughter, Cynthia Campbell Jennings, Aug. 19, 1990. Surviving are one daughter, Mrs. Bill (Karen Campbell) Bailey of Peterstown; three granddaughters, Mrs. John (Angela Jennings) Chernauskas of Union, Julia Bailey of Princeton and Mrs. Jerry (Amy Bailey) Meadows of Ballard; one great-grandson, Joshua Andrew White of Peterstown, two stepgreat-granddaughters, Sara and Jerrica Meadows, both of Peterstown; one brother, Elwood McPeak and his wife, Irene, of Salt Sulphur Springs; two sisters, Evelyne McPeak Roles of Winston-Salem, N.C., and Audrey McPeak Griffith of Covington, Va.; one great-aunt, Mrs. Wade (Talma) Neel of Zenith; two brothers-in-law, Haskell and his wife, June Campbell, and Emerson and his wife, Minnie, both of Union; one sister-in-law, Mrs. George (Ginny) Sorrell of Safety Harbor, Fla., and several nieces, nephews and cousins. Graveside services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Greenhill Cemetery in Union, with the Rev. Bob Ratliff officiating. Burial will follow in the Greenhill Cemetery in Union. Loudermillk WASHINGTON, D.C. ­ Thelma Frances Loudermilk, 75, of Washington, D.C., died Thursday, Sept. 9, 1999, in Washington following a short illness. Born Sept. 23, 1923, at Clintonville, she was the daughter of the late Homer and Orlena Mary Gilkerson Loudermilk. She lived in Washington for more than 50 years. She attended the Clintonville Church of Christ and was a retired clerk from Peoples Drug Store. Survivors include three brothers, Delbert and Burley Loudermilk, both of Clintonville, and Orlen Loudermilk of Oakland, Calif.; and several nieces and nephews. Graveside services and interment will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Church of Christ Cemetery, Clintonville, with the Rev. Leroy Crane officiating. Orville Edward Payne BECKLEY ­ Orville Edward Payne, 69, of Beckley died Friday, Sept. 10, 1999, in a Beckley hospital following a short illness. Born Dec. 3, 1929, in Wyoming, W.Va., he was a son of Mila Lusk Payne of Coal City and the late Luther Payne. He was a graduate of Herndon High School and was retired from Westmoreland Coal Co. He was an avid hunter, an outdoorsman and a member of the Christian faith. Survivors include his wife Dana N. Cook Payne; two sons, Orville Payne Jr. and his wife, Lisa, of Cabell Heights, and Byron Ray Payne and his wife, Tina, of Morgantown; two stepsons, William Baker of Stanaford Acres and Barry Baker of Charlotte, N.C.; and a brother, Darrell Payne and his wife, Peggy, of Beckley. Pennington SCARBR0 ­ Helen Virginia Pennington, 74, of Scarbro, formerly of Page, died Saturday, Sept. 11, 1999, at a Beckley hospital, following a long illness. Born March 31, 1925, at Seth, she was the daughter of the late Herbert Lee and Effie Kirk Miller. Mrs. Pennington was a resident of Scarbro for 25 years. She was of the Baptist faith. She was preceded in death by her husband, William "Bill" Pennington, in 1971. Survivors include a son, Russell Pennington and his wife, Colleen, of Oak Hill; a daughter, Sheya Lopez of Hickory Hill, Ill.; a brother, Clarence Miller and his wife, Janice, of Bluewell; a sister, Evelyn Tinney of Marlinton; seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Graveside services will be 1 p.m. Tuesday with Pastor Lloyd Higgenbotham officiating. Burial will following Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Beckley. Ray, 80, of Daniels, died at 3:20 a.m. Sunday, Sept. 12, 1999, in Beckley Appalachian Regional Hospital following a long illness. Mr. Ray was a former coal miner and a member of the Skelton Freewill Baptist Church. Born Aug. 1, 1919, at Witcher Creek, he was the son of the late Birdie Ray Sr. and Chloe Oxier Ray. Survivors include two brothers, Bertie Ray of Spanishburg and Jack Ray of Detroit; and special care givers, Charles and Joyce Massie Daniels, with whom he had made his home for the past 17 years. Graveside rites and burial will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Williams Cemetery at White Oak with Pastor Rollan Roberts officiating. There will be no visitation.
