Register Herald Obituaries for September 14, 1999 James H. Carte RUSSELLVILLE ­ James Harold Carte, 63, of Greenbrier County, died Sunday, Sept. 12, 1999, at his home following a long illness. Born March 9, 1936, in Clifftop, he was the son of the late Samuel Woodson and Wilsie Eagle Carte. Mr. Carte had been a resident of Russellville since 1973 and was of the Baptist faith. He was a U.S. Air Force veteran, having served four years, and was a disabled machinist. He was preceded in death by a sister, Pansy Carte; and four brothers, Olin, George, Otis, and Odon Carte. Survivors include his wife, Joan V. Carte; two daughters, Teresa Ellen Queen and Diana Marie Wilson, both of Russellville; two sons, Gregory Allen Carte and James Christopher Carte, both of Russellville; two sisters, Eula Jordon of Martha, Ky., and Wanda Adkins of Terry; a brother, Samuel Carte of Maryland; three grandchildren, Elizabeth Marie Jones, Samantha Elaine Jones and Roger Lee Jones Jr.; and three great-grandchildren, Katlynn Dixie Queen, Brittany Nicole Crowe, and Cameron Tyler Jones. Services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Wallace and Wallace Funeral Home Chapel, Rainelle, with the Rev. Mark Davis officiating. Burial will follow in the Carte Family Cemetery at Russellville. Ottis Derossett OAK HILL ­ Ottis Derossett, 78, formerly of Boomer, died Saturday, Sept. 11, 1999, at his home, under the care of Hospice, following a long illness. Born Dec. 5, 1920, in Dwale, Ky., he was the son of the late Isaac Derossett and Martha Crum Derossett. Mr. Derossett was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, having received two Purple Hearts, a member of the UMWA Local 713, and of the Freewill Baptist faith. He was a retired coal miner and foreman with Allied Chemical Co. Semet Solvy Division. Survivors include his wife, Violet Blevins Derossett of Oak Hill; two children, Ike Derossett and his wife, Sylvia, of Deepwater, and Sue Massey and her husband, Bob, of Fayetteville; two grandsons, Todd Derossett of Nashville, Tenn., and Shane Massey of Fayetteville. Services will be 2 p.m. today at High Lawn Funeral Home Chapel, with the Rev. Harold Massey officiating. Entombment will follow in High Lawn Memorial Park Mausoleum, Oak Hill. Dillion, 88, died Wednesday, Sept. 8, 1999, in a Fairlea hospital. Born July 29, 1911, in Summers County, she was the daughter of the late Oscar and Elmira Fleshman Smith. Mrs. Dillion was a homemaker. She was preceded in death by her husband, William E. "Bud" Dillion; a daughter, Sarah Meador; four brothers, Frank, Weldon, Wilbur and Theodore Smith; four sisters, Sylvia Thomas, Ella Terry, Mae Newman and Odessa Broyles; and a grandson, Lloyd Meador. Survivors include two grandsons, Jim Meador and Donald Meador; three granddaughters, Sue Ellen Bates of Bluefield, Va., Wilma Lee Carr of Lindside and Jeannie Lynn Meador of Greenville; and a great-granddaughter, Angela Dawn Carr. Thomas 'Lum' Edwards KEYROCK ­ Thomas C. "Lum" Edwards, 64, died Sunday, Sept. 12, 1999, at his home following a short illness. Born Dec. 26, 1934, in Rock View, he was the son of the late Woodrow W. and Alma V. Johnson Edwards. Mr. Edwards was retired from Cabot Oil and Gas Corp. He was a U.S. Army veteran and a lifelong resident of Wyoming County. He was of the Baptist faith and enjoyed hunting and fishing and spending time with his granddaughter, Lakin. He was preceded in death by a brother, Gordon P. "Buddy" Edwards. Survivors include his wife of 38 years, Mary Ann Cook Edwards; a daughter, Debra Ann Woosley and her husband, Mark, of Keyrock; a son, Thomas C. Edwards II of War; a brother, Robert E. Edwards and his wife, Nancy, of Rock View; and a granddaughter, Lakin Nicole Woosley. Services will be 3 p.m. Wednesday at the Calfee Funeral Service Chapel, Pineville, with the Rev. Born Dec. 3, 1929, in Wyoming, W.Va., he was a son of Nila Lusk Payne of Coal City and the late Luther Payne. Mr. Payne was a 1947 graduate of Herndon High School and retired from Westmoreland Coal Co. He was an avid hunter and outdoorsman, and a of the Christian faith. Other survivors include his wife, Dana N. Cook Payne; two sons, Orville Payne Jr., and his wife, Lisa, of Cabell Heights, and Byron Ray Payne and his wife, Tena, of Morgantown; a brother, Darrell Payne and his wife, Peggy, of Beckley; and four grandchildren, Byron, Stacey, Orville Payne III, and Kelly. Born Oct. 24, 1917, in Wayne County, she was the daughter of the late Alfred and Dorothy Clay Dyer. Mrs. Poindexter was a homemaker and a member of the Marianna Freewill Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Amos Poindexter; and two sons, John and Ronald Poindexter. Survivors include a son, Harold Poindexter and his wife, Ella, of Huntington; a sister, Betty Mills of East Lynn; two grandsons, Gary Poindexter and his wife, Susie, of Mullens, and John L. (Les) Poindexter, and his wife, Valerie, of St. Albans; three great-grandchildren, Josh and Emily Poindexter of Mullens, and Alyssa Poindexter of St. Albans; a daughter-in-law, Sue Cook Poindexter of Wyoming; several nieces and nephews; and a host of neighbors and friends. Survivors include two brothers, Birdie Ray of Spanishburg, and Jack Ray of Detroit, Mich.; and special care givers, Charles and Joyce Massie of Daniels, with whom he had made his home for the past 17 years. Mr. Shaw was a lifelong resident of Bluefield and physician's assistant for Dr. A. Paine Sr., with 26 years of service. Born July 7, 1928, in Clear Creek, she was the daughter of the late Wayman Wriston and Belle Stover Wriston. Mrs. Williams was a homemaker and had been a resident of Beckley since 1957. She was preceded in death by her husband, Clarence Williams in 1997; two brothers, Carvis and Daryl Williams; a sister, Dorothy Stover; and a nephew, Ernest Lloyd Stover. Survivors include a brother, Tracey Wriston of Clear Creek; six nephews, Clarence Stover of Moulton, Ala., Glen A.
