Register Herald Obituaries for September 15, 1999 Girlie Gwinn Harper NIMITZ ­ Girlie Gwinn Harper, 84, formerly of Lowell, died Monday, Sept. 13, 1999, at a Nimitz care home following a long illness. Born Oct. 11, 1914, in Lowell, she was the daughter of the late Mason and Sarah Love Gwinn. Mrs. Harper was a retired elementary school teacher, having taught in the Summers County school system for 39 years. She was a graduate of Alderson High School and received her undergraduate and master's degrees in education from Duke University, Durham, N.C. She was a member of Keller Presbyterian Church, Lowell, where she served as an elder and a former clerk. Mrs. Harper was a member of the local and state Retired Teachers Association and a life member of the National Education Association. She was chairman of the Riverview Church Homecoming Committee for several years and served as secretary for the Farm Bureau in Hinton. During the 1950s and early 1960s, she was a 50-year member of Alderson Chapter No. 119, Order of the Eastern Star. She was preceded in death by a brother, Charles Gwinn; and two sisters, Mary Gwinn Simmons and Margaret Gwinn. Survivors include her husband, W.G. "Bill" Harper; a brother, Frank W. Gwinn, M.D., of Ashland, Ky.; one niece; and one nephew. Graveside services will be 2 p.m. today at Riverview Cemetery, Creamery, with the Rev. Stewart McMurray officiating. Burial will follow in the cemetery. Pallbearers will be Mike Catron, Andy Gwinn, Jack Keaton, Tom Nelson, Roger Persinger and Charles Adkins. Honorary pallbearers will be Joe Lively, Lewis Lively, Kenneth Sherwood, Joe Kovach, Frank Comer Sr., Frank Comer Jr., Lowell Kirkham, Dale Hedrick, David Palmer and Russell "Bobby" Lively. Arrangements by Lobban Funeral Home, Alderson. Lowell T. Hutchinson HICO ­ Lowell Thomas "Tom" Hutchinson, 56, formerly of Handley, died Monday, Sept. 13, 1999, at his home following a long illness. Born Sept. 22, 1942, in Handley, he was the son of the late Jack Ted Hutchinson and Mary Louise Ryals Hutchinson. "Hutch" was a truck driver, mechanic and heavy equipment operator most of his life and was owner and operator of several businesses, including Hutchinson's Lovejoy Transfer at Handley, Montgomery Industrial Supply, Hutchinson's Truck and Trailer Repair and T&S Truck Repair. He was a former employee of Bell Lines Trucking Co., Raleigh Mine Supply, Vecellio and Grogan Inc. and Patton Oil. He attended Russellville Baptist Church. Survivors include his wife, Mary Jane Fannin Hutchinson; six daughters, Lee Hutchinson of Seffner, Fla., Tammy Tucker of Buffalo, B.J. Dingess of Worthington, Ky., Jeniffer Hutchinson at home, Susan Stevenson of Mount Carbon and Robin Cavett of South Carolina; two brothers, Wayne Hutchinson of Pratt and Joe Hutchinson of Ohio; three sisters, Pat Couch and Melonie Carter, both of Ohio, and Mary Jane Maner of Georgia; 10 grandchildren, Patrick and Ashley Neff, Matthew, Michael and Nikki Dingess, LaDonna and Kayla Buckley, Lora and Charles Stevenson Jr., and Megan Cavett; and a great-grandchild. Geneva J. Repass MULLENS ­ Geneva J. Repass, 77, of 921 Poplar St., died Monday, Sept. 13, 1999, in a Beckley hospital following a short illness. Born May 5, 1922, in Mullens, she was the daughter of the late William Pierce Short and Roma E. Smith Short. Mrs. Repass was a lifelong resident of Mullens and a 1941 graduate of Mullens High School. She attended St. Andrews Episcopal Church, Mullens, and was a member of the United Food and Commercial Union. Mrs. Repass was a retired bookkeepper for the A&P Grocery stores in Mullens and Beckley. She was preceded in death by her husband, William H. Repass, on Jan. 11, 1995; and an infant son, William H. Repass Jr., in 1943. Survivors include a daughter, Billie Maddy and her husband, Doug, of Plum Orchard; three sisters, Helen Fowler and her husband, John, Betty Sue Crotty and Imogene Rhoades and her husband, Robert, all of Mullens; a brother, Charles Robert Short of New Smyrna Beach, Fla.; and two grandsons, Joshua and Zachary Maddy. Services will be 11 a.m. Thursday at Tankersley Funeral Home Chapel, Mullens, with the Rev. Adeeb Khalil officiating. Burial will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Beckley. Roop TRENTON, Mich. ­ James Edward Roop, 79, formerly of Sun, died Monday, Sept. 13, 1999, in a Wayne, Mich., hospital. Born Aug. 31, 1920, in Sun, he was the son of Frances Roop. Mr. Roop was a general laborer and served in the U.S. Army during World War II. Survivors include his wife, Hazel Blankenship Roop; a daughter, Judy Nicksich and her husband, Greg, of Michigan; a granddaughter, Jenny of Michigan; and many nieces and nephews. Services will be 11 a.m. Thursday at Blue Ridge Funeral Home Chapel, Beckley, with Pastor Gilbert Dotson officiating. Burial will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Beckley. Stone ORMOND BEACH, Fla. ­ Ronald Keith Stone, 52, formerly of Sophia, died Monday, Sept. 13, 1999, at his home. Born in Sophia, Mr. Stone relocated his family to Fort Myers, Fla., in 1977, moving to Ormond Beach in 1983. He was a U.S. Marine in the Vietnam War and a member of VFW No. 1590, Daytona Beach, Fla. Mr. Stone was general manager for Air Liquide Corp., a welding supply company in Ormond Beach. He was a 1965 graduate of Sophia High School and earned an associate's degree in business administration form Morris Harvey College, Charleston. He enjoyed fishing, hiking and golf. Survivors include his wife of 32 years, Pebble Lee Stone; a son, Ronald Howell Stone of Jacksonville, Fla.; a daughter, Lori Stone Maushund and her husband, Todd Jeffrey, of Port Orange, Fla.; two brothers, Kenneth Stone of Beckley and Luke Baldwin of Seattle; a sister, Drema Lee of Titusville, Fla.; and his mother-in-law and father-in-law, Raben and Ava Lee Cook of Ormond Beach. A private ceremony will be held at a later date in Ormond Beach. Klara M. Wilson PINEVILLE ­ Klara Mae Wilson, 83, died Monday, Sept. 13, 1999, in a Wyoming County care center. Born Dec. 12, 1915, in Williamson, she was the daughter of the late William B. and Elizabeth McCoy Wilson. Ms. Wilson was a charter member of Pineville Presbyterian Church and a graduate of Pineville High School . She loved nature ­ animals, flowers and wildlife ­ being an environmentalist. She was a legal secretary for Bailey-Worrell and Viers and also a school aide. She was preceded in death by two sisters, Margaret Elizabeth Wilson and Edith M. Wilson; and a brother, William Preston Wilson. Services will be 4 p.m. Thursday at Pineville Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Barbara Ann Hedin officiating. Burial will follow in Palm Memorial Gardens, Matheny. Friends may call one hour before services Thursday at the church. Church members and friends will serve as pallbearers.
