Register Herald Obituaries for September 17, 1999 Nancy L. Buckland HINTON ­ Nancy L. Buckland, 86, died Monday, Sept. 13, 1999, in an Elkton, Md., hospital following a long illness. Born Aug. 7, 1913, at Hinton, she was the daughter of the late John Alfred and Ida Irene McBridge Lilly. Mrs. Buckland was a retired employee of the Old Hinton Hospital, was a member of the Bellepoint Baptist Church and was a lifelong resident of Summers County. She was preceded in death by her husband, Harvey Wilson Buckland; a sister, Mamie Buckland; and a brother, Hobert Lilly. Survivors include a sister, Lola McCormick of Elkton, Md.; two brothers, Cecil and Hubert Lilly, both of Elkton; and several nieces and nephews. Services will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Ronald Meadows Funeral Parlors Chapel with Pastor Chris Brown officiating. Burial will follow in Valley View Cemetery, Powley's Creek. Buckley Herbert Anthony Buckley, 72, of 206 Grandview Road, Daniels, died of natural causes Tuesday, Sept. 14, 1999, in a Beckley hospital. Born June 28, 1927, in Laurel, Miss., he was the son of the late Herbert Anthony Buckley Sr. and Clara Harrison Buckley. Mr. Buckley was a electrical contractor, residential and commercial. He was a member of the St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church, was a U.S. Army veteran serving during the Korean Conflict, and was an Army Reserve captain. He was a graduate of Tuskegee University and a member of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Sigma Pi Phi Boule, Knights of Columbus, Connecting Links of Links Inc. Mr. Buckley taught at Stratton High School and Junior College in Austin, Texas. He was a photographer and reporter for Beckley Newspapers, supervisor of Beckley Manufacturing Plant and owner of B.E. Electric Co. He was an electrical contractor on Interstate 64 and did electrical work at the Fire State on Eisenhower Drive, Sandstone and several other sections. He was a member of the National Electric Contractors Association and the Executive Committee of Raleigh County Republican Party and was director of Neighbor Hood Youth Corp. He owned Round the Clock Child Care Center on Church Street. His awards were: Outstanding Achievement Award (Salute the Blacks in Business), Outstanding Community Award from Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc., and an award for Outstanding Contributions to the White House Conference in Small Business in 1980. He was recipient of an award from Beckley-Raleigh County Chamber of Commerce in 1970 and won many awards and ribbons at the West Virginia State Fair for canning, flowers, herbs, plants and wine. Survivors include his wife, A. Berthenia Lott Buckley; a sister, Clarise Buckley of San Diego, Calif.; three nephews, Thomas L. Lott of Seattle, Wash., Booker T. Lott of Dallas, Texas, and William Buckley of Chicago, Ill.; two nieces, Jacqueline Elaine Lott and Connie Lott, both of Seattle, Wash.; cousins, Floyd and Andrea Jones of Mississippi, Maxine Stuttley of Chicago, Ill., John Hill of Mississippi, Jerry Hill of Richmond, Va., Bernard Hill of Houston, Texas, Patricia Hill of Meridian, Miss., Charles Hill of Houston, Texas, Alfred Hill of Stone Mountain, Ga., and Cleveland Hill of Thibodaux, Miss.; and a host of other relatives and friends. Services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church, Oakwood Avenue, Beckley, with Father Pericles Malacaman officiating. Gandee PINEVILLE ­ Harry Emerson Gandee, 76, died Wednesday, Sept. 15, 1999, at his home following a sudden illness. Born Dec. 30, 1922, at Clendenin, he was the son of the late Haze and Earlie Pickering Gandee. Mr. Gandee was a deacon at the Baileysville Baptist Church. He was a retired supervisor for Ashland Oil and was a World War II Army veteran. Survivors include his wife of 53 years, Macie Cooper Gandee; two daughters, Barbara Bailey and her husband, Bob, of Hebron, Ohio, and Linda Bailey and her husband, Jerry, of Ashland, Ky.; two sisters, Dewilla Woods of Clendenin and Willadean Jarrett of Clendenin; a nephew, Joe Cooper and his wife, Lucy, of Brenton; and an extended family member, Charles ³Smoky² Toms of Brenton; five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Olga Ruffino SUMTER, S.C. ­ Olga Ruffino, 86, formerly of Beaver, died Tuesday, Aug. 31, 1999, at a Sumter, S.C., hospital following a short illness. Born Oct. 19, 1912, in Christopher, Ill., she was the daughter of the late Joseph and Martha Boulet Gautier. Mrs. Ruffino was a member of the Beaver Methodist Church, Beaver. She was preceded in death by her husband, John Ruffino, in 1984. Survivors include a daughter, Mary T. McEwen and her husband, Fred, of Sumter, with whom she made her home; a son, J. Steve Ruffino of Richmond, Va.; a brother, Jules Gautier of Virginia; a sister, Catherine Hill of Louisiana; four grandsons, Michael Alex, Jonathan Joseph, Andrew Edward, and Timothy Morris McEwen; eight great-grandchildren, Michael Scott, Elizabeth Ryan, Jon Christopher, April Joanna, Adam Christian, Jason Andrew, Cari Leigh, and Mark Alexander McEwen; and a great-great-grandson, Aaron Joseph. Small WINONA ­ Lewis Walker Small, 78, died Tuesday, Sept. 14, 1999, at an Oak Hill medical center following a long illness. Born Feb. 23, 1921, at Edmond, he was the son of the late Charles and Hannah Clement Small. Mr. Small was a World War II U.S. Army veteran, had been a 52-year resident of Winona, and was a member of the Keeney's Creek Baptist Church of Winona. He was a retired coal miner and a member of the UMWA. Survivors include his wife of 53 years, Virginia Stokley Small; a daughter, Paula Ellis and her husband, David, of Winona; two sons, Dennis Walker Small and his wife, Judy, of Winona, and Lewis E. ³Eddie² Small and his wife, Cathy, of Winona; two sisters, Edith Jones of Marion, Va., and Gladys Jones of Fayetteville; a brother, Herbert Small of Winona; and five grandchildren, Jaime, Jenny, Stacy, Ryan and River. Mitzi Sue Wills Mitzi Sue Wills, 59, of Beaver, went to be with our Lord and Savior on Wednesday, Sept. 15, 1999. Born Jan. 31, 1940, at Beaver, she was the oldest daughter of the late Charles (Ponzi) and Clarice Hopkins Dillon. Mrs. Wills was a lifelong resident of Beaver, and was a member of the First Baptist Church of Beaver, where she taught a Youth Sunday School Class. She was a 1957 graduate of Shady Spring High School. She was preceded in death by her oldest brother, John C. Dillon, and a daughter-in-law, Teresa Wills. Survivors include her husband of 42 years, Lloyd C. Wills; three sons, Lloyd (Rick) Wills and his wife, Connie, of Beckley, Matthew Wills and his wife, Cindy, of Beaver, and Mark Wills and his wife, Jessica, of Beaver; grandson, Joshua Wills; granddaughters, Andrea Wills, Amanda Wills, and Cheyanne Wills, and also Kristin Pack, Kenny Cooper, Jackie Smith, Bethany McClanahan; four brothers, Herman (Toby) Martin of Bradley, Charles Dillon of Shady Spring, James Dillon of Grand River, Ohio, and Clark Dillon of Bristol, Va.; three sisters, Kitty Dantzman of National City, Calif., Judy Richards of Cool Ridge, and Jeannie Moore of Beaver; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, many friends and neighbors. Wriston Barney Benton Wriston, 62, of Beckley, died Sunday, Sept. 12, 1999, at his home following a short illness. Born March 15, 1937, at Clear Creek, he was the son of the late Lundy P. and Gladys Evelyn Williams Wriston. Mr. Wriston spent his childhood in Clear Creek and was a 1954 graduate of Clear Fork High School. On Sept. 15, 1954, he enlisted in the U.S. Air Force. During his military career he was awarded the Joint Service Commendation Medal, the Air Force Commendation Medal, Air Force Good Conduct Medal, Small Arms Expert Marksman Medal, Air Force Outstanding Unit Award, Air Force Longevity Service Ribbon, National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal and the Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal. On Dec. 1, 1980, he ended his military career and returned to the Beckley area, where he earned a degree in criminal justice from The College of West Virginia. He and his wife founded and operated Copperco Inc. until his death. He was a kind man and had many friends and family. He was preceded in death by a sister, Reda Stover. Survivors include his wife, Miriam Eileen Simcox Wriston, formerly of Lockhaven, Pa.; a daughter, Ronda Hicks of Enid, Okla.; two grandsons; a granddaughter; two great-grandchildren; a brother, Alton Wriston of North Carolina; two nieces, Connie Burgess and Sherry Ball, both of Beckley; and three nephews, Larry and Mitchell Stover, both of Beckley, and L.A. Wriston of North Carolina. Services will be 1 p.m. Saturday at Melton Mortuary Chapel with the Rev. Johnnie Burgess officiating. Burial will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Beckley.
