Register Herald Obituaries for September 21, 1999 Harry F. Cooper, M.D. DAYTONA BEACH SHORES, Fla. ­ Harry F. Cooper, M.D., died Wednesday, Sept. 15, 1999, in the Halifax Medical Center, Daytona Beach, Fla. Born Sept. 27, 1919, at Athens, he was the son of the late Fred V. Cooper and Pearl Preston Cooper. Dr. Cooper was a graduate of Athens High School and was graduated cum laude from Concord College. He received his medical degree from Thomas Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia in 1944. He completed his internship at Illinois Central Hospital in Chicago in October 1944. He entered the Navy in January 1944, and served overseas during World War II as a lieutenant junior grade in The Medical Corp from October 1944 to September 1946. Following his discharge from the Navy, he completed his surgical residency in Chicago. He practiced surgery in Chicago and Minot, N.D., before locating in Beckley in 1953, where he practiced general and thoracic surgery until he retired in 1985. Dr. Cooper was in practice at the Beckley Medical Arts and was chief of surgery at the Beckley Hospital. He was attending surgeon at the Raleigh General Hospital and was a consultant in surgery at both the Beckley Appalachian Regional Hospital and Beckley Veterans Administration Hospital. He was professor of surgery at Marshall Medical School. He was a diplomat of the American Board of Surgery, a fellow of the American College of Surgeons, the International College of Surgeons, the American College of Chest Physicians, and the Southeastern Surgical Congress. He was also a member of the American Medical Association, the West Virginia State Medical Society, the Raleigh County Medical Society and the American Society of Abdominal Surgeons. He was a member of the Beckley Presbyterian Church before moving to Florida in 1985. He belonged to the following organizations: Concord Lodge of AM and FM No. 48 of Athens, W.Va., Beckley Chapter of the Royal Arch Masons No. 38, Mount Hope Commandery No. 22 Knights Templars, Mount Hope, Beni Kedem Temple of Charleston, the Beckley Rotary Club and Black Knight Country Club. Survivors include his wife of 47 years, Constance Cooper of Daytona Beach Shores; two sons, Conrad F. and his wife, Carol, and Kim B. and his wife, Lillie, all of Beckley; two daughters, Melodie Martin and her husband, Tom, of Charleston, and Yvonne Raymond and her husband, Rick, of Salt Lake City, Utah; nine grandchildren; two sisters, Irene Bowen of Dalton, Ga., and Frances Scyphers of Athens; an aunt, Virginia Bonds of Beckley. Memorial services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Beckley Presbyterian Church. Friends may call one hour before the services Wednesday at the church. Erwin Dorothy Mae Wiseman Erwin, 79, of Eccles, died Wednesday, Sept. 15, 1999, at her home. Born May 26, 1920, she was the daughter of the late Fred Wiseman and Helen Elizabeth Shook Wiseman. She was preceded in death by her husband, Wylie Golden Erwin; a son, Denzil Lee Erwin; son-in-law, Paul E. Smith; and her paternal grandparents, Drucela Elizabeth Clay and Sherman Clay. Survivors include a daughter, Helen Elizabeth Smith of La Marque, Texas; two grandsons, Andra M. Streho and his wife, Judith, of La Marque, and Patrick S. Erwin of Sunset, Fla.; a granddaughter, Dottie Lee Streho Matlock and husband, Steven, of Gretna, La.; seven great-grandchildren. Her body was donated to the School of Medicine, West Virginia University, Morgantown. Memorial services will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at the Eccles Community Church, Eccles, with the Rev. Hannah OCEANA ­ Jean Sybil Hannah, 71, crossed over to a new life Saturday, Sept. 18, 1999, at a Beckley hospital following a short illness. Born Nov. 6, 1927, at Frost, she was the daughter of the late Albert L. and Goldie Dilley Fertig. She was a homemaker and attended the Oceana First Church of God. She was a loving mother, grandmother and friend. She was preceded in death by a sister, Joan Fertig; and a brother-in-law, James "Webb" Powell. Survivors include a daughter, Marsha Hannah Thompson of Pineville and her companion, Garwood Griffith of Oceana; a granddaughter, Chelsea Hannah Thompson of Pineville; a sister, Elta M. Powell of Covington, Va.; a brother, Lyle D. Fertig and his wife, Elnora, of Covington; nephews, nieces and several special friends. Lorain Lambert Lorain Lambert, 85, of Midway, died Sunday, Sept. 19, 1999, at a Beckley hospital following a long illness. Born Jan. 8, 1914, in San-dy Hook, Ky., she was the daughter of Joseph and Susie Wilson Quesenberry. She was a homemaker and was of the Baptist faith. She was preceded in death by her husband, William Blaine Lambert; one son, Charles Edward Lambert; two brothers, Bob and Denzil Quesenberry; and a sister, Goldie Stout. Survivors include three sons, Johnny Lee Lambert of Jefferson, Ohio, William Kenneth Lambert of Sophia, and Eddie Joe Lambert of Midway; five daughters, Gladys Milleson of Gibsonburg, Ohio, Shelby Jean Baker of Middleburg, Ohio, Margaret "Margie" Ashby and Faylene Utt, both of Midway, and Brenda Lou Weikle of Bellefontaine, Ohio. Loudermilk CLINTONVILLE ­ Rose Marie Loudermilk, 63, died 10 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 19, 1999, in a Fairlea care center following a long illness. Born March 6, 1936, in Gailsburg, Ill., she was the daughter of the late Leo and Alta Roberts Gregg. Mrs. Loudermilk was of the Baptist faith, a homemaker and a 33-year resident of Greenbrier County. Survivors include her husband, Clifton E. Loudermilk, and a son, Chester G. Loudermilk, both of Clintonville. Mrs. McGrady was a homemaker and a member of the Regular Baptist Church on Johnstown Road, Beckley. She was preceded in death by her husband, Earl McGrady; and a son, Bill. Rhodes Gary Wayne Rhodes, 43, of Crab Orchard, died Sunday, Sept. 19, 1999, in a Beckley hospital following a short illness. Born Jan. 5, 1956, at Surveyor, he was the son of the late Lloyd and Bertha Mae Rhodes. Mr. Rhodes was a disabled employee of Sunset Memorial Park, was of the Holiness faith, and was a 10-year resident of Crab Orchard. He was preceded in death by a brother, Ronnie Lee Rhodes. William Shrewsberry LERONA ­ William Andrew Shrewsberry, 72, of Indian Meadows, formerly of 216 Union Drive, Princeton, died Sunday, Sept. 19, 1999, in a Princeton hospital. Born March 25, 1927, at Besoco, he was the son of the late Richard M. Shrewsberry and Viola Cooper Shrewsberry Lilly. Mr. Shrewsberry was a retired security guard for Princeton Community Hospital. He was a member of the Lilly Grove Baptist Church, Princeton. He was the former owner and operator of Princeton Television Sales and Service and a former employee of Bluefield Hardware. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He had been a resident of Princeton since 1959, moving there from Rhodell. He was preceded in death by three brothers. Survivors include his wife, Delrhea Hunter Shrewsberry of Lerona; two sons, Richard W. "Skip" Shrewsberry and his wife, Margaret, of Princeton, and Stephen C. Shrewsberry and his wife, Sonya, of Rock; two daughters, Barbara L. Sowers and her fiance, R. Wayne Wright, of Roanoke, Va., and Andrea K. Shrewsberry of Jacksonville, Fla.; 15 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; a brother, Rondo M. "Mack" Shrewsberry and his wife, Tella, of Daniels; and a sister, Vilda Hall of Princeton. Services will be 1 p.m. today at the George W. Seaver Funeral Home Chapel, with the Rev.
