Born Oct. 20, 1935, in War Eagle, she was the daughter of the late Buddy and Lenorie Mounts Compton. Mrs. Bowles was a homemaker and member of Pentecostal House of Prayer, Lynco. She was a ladies aide at the church. She worked at Clear Fork Valley Golf Course for 19 years. She was preceded in death by two sons, David and Rickey Bowles; three brothers, Elmer, Frank and Keen Compton; and a sister, Alley Cline. Survivors include her husband of 48 years, Luther Bowles; four sons, Michael Bowles of Lynco, Kenny Bowles and his wife, Deloris, of Echman, Benny Bowles and his wife, Charlotte, of Charlotte, N.C., and Tony Bowles and his wife, Angie, of Oceana; two daughters, Diania Hazelwood and her husband, Woody, of Greensboro, N.C., and Kathy Brunty and her husband, Freddy, of Matheny; two brothers, Chalmer and Cecil Compton, both of War Eagle; three sisters, Niege Brown of Flint, Mich., Myrtle Coleman of Welch and Reen Manus of Gilbert; 17 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. Cox, 79, died Monday, Sept. 20, 1999, at a Richmond, Va., hospital following a short illness. Born May 8, 1920, in Nile, Nicholas County, he was the son of the late Hartley M. and Iva B. Armentrout Cox. Mr. Cox was a retired merchant and a member of Sewell Valley Baptist Church, where he was a former Sunday school teacher. He was preceded in death by a brother, Hartley M. "Mopy" Cox Jr. Survivors include his wife, Eva M. Cruse Cox; a daughter, Lisa Gutshall and her husband, David, of Rainelle; two grandchildren, Stephen and Stephanie Gutshall, both of Rainelle; and a niece, Patty Osborne and her husband, Jerry, of Rainelle. Born June 20, 1965, in Chicago, she was the daughter of Bernard J. and Addie Faye Dixon Morgan of Oceana. Mrs. Hatfield was a homemaker and a member of Oceana Freewill Baptist Church. She attended Family Praise and Worship Center and was a member of the Presidents Club in Avon. She was preceded in death by a sister, Pamela Morgan. Hughes, 82, died Monday, Sept. 20, 1999, at her home following an apparent heart attack. Born May 11, 1917, in Jumping Branch, she was the daughter of the late J. Alf and Sonja Upton Lilly. Mrs. Hughes lived most of her life in Summers and Cabell counties. She was a homemaker and attended Bluestone Baptist Church, Jumping Branch. She was preceded in death by her husband, William F. Hughes, on Oct. 8, 1989; and two brothers, Dick and John Lilly. Survivors include a son, William A. Lewis, 90, of 218 Davis St., Beckley, died Tuesday, Sept. 21, 1999, at a Beckley care center following a short illness. Born Aug. 3, 1909, in Ashe County, N.C., he was the son of the late Hilton L. Lewis and Cisco Lewis. Mr. Lewis was a heavy equipment operator, retiring from Vecellio and Grogan. He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, the UMWA and a 65-year resident of Beckley. He was a descendent of Charles and Andrew Lewis, who fought in the first battle of the American Revolutionary War, and of Meriwether Lewis of the Lewis and Clark Expedition. He was a great-great-grandson of Col. Gideon Lewis, who was a scout during the American Revolutionary War. Fitzpatrick Scarbrough, 69, died Tuesday, Sept. 21, 1999, at a Beckley hospital following a long illness. Born Nov. 5, 1929, in Whipple, she was the daughter of the late Owen Fitzpatrick and Chessie Stover Fitzpatrick. Mrs. Scarbrough was of the Baptist faith and a homemaker. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ralph Bryson Sr.; and a son, Leonard Scarbrough. Schroder Jr., 81, of Maple Avenue, died Monday, Sept. 20, 1999, at Ruby Memorial Hospital. Born May 8, 1918, in Martinsburg, he was the son of the late John L. Schroder Sr. and Amy Glover Schroder. Mr. Schroder was a member of Wesley United Methodist Church, Morgantown. He was a graduate of Martinsburg High School and earned a bachelor's and master's degrees in mechanical engineering at West Virginia University. He was a member of Tau Beta Pi, the top honorary in engineering. In 1941 he went to work for U.S. Steel as a junior engineer at the former H.C. Frick Coke Co. He was a veteran of World War II, having served with the U.S. Navy. After the war he was employed by Gay Mining Co. In 1949 he returned to U.S. Steel's coal operations as assistant engineer planning at Gary. He retired as president of U.S. Steel Mining Co. Inc., a subsidiary of U.S. Steel Corp. After his retirement, he served as special assistant to the president of the American Mining Congress. In July 1984, he was appointed as dean of the College of Mineral and Energy Resources at WVU. Other services to the state include membership on Gov. Moore's Energy Task Force and chairing the Mine Inspectors' Examining Board. He had been active in many social, industrial and professional organizations, holding several offices. He was a registered professional engineer in West Virginia and Kentucky, and was a member of the American Institute of Mining, Metallurgical and Petroleum Engineers, the West Virginia Coal Mining Institute and the National Mine Rescue Association. He was also a member of the Old Timers Club and King Coal Club. He was the recipient of two prestigious awards in 1992. The Society of Mining, Metallurgy and Exploration Inc. (SME) conferred the Howard N. Eavenson Award "for the outstanding management and administrative abilities in leading a major coal company through the 1970s into the 1980s as well as for leadership in engineering education into the 1990s." During 1992 he received the American Institute of Mining, Metallurgical and Petroleum Engineers Erskine Ramsey Medal recognizing distinguished achievement in the production, benefaction or utilization of bituminous or anthracite coal. In 1993, he was honored with the Society of Mining, Metallurgy and Exploration Inc. distinguished member award. This year he was named to the West Virginia Coal Hall of Fame. Survivors include his wife of 53 years, Bette Sneddon Schroder; a son, John L. Schroder III and his wife, Sandi, of Beckley; a daughter, Bobbe E. McClure of Van Horn, Texas; two sisters, Janet Maddox of Winchester, Va., and Frances Morris Schroder of Martinsburg; and two grandchildren, John L. Schroder IV and Lea Alexandra Schroder. Kanawha St., Beckley, died at 8 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 19, 1999, at a Beckley hospital following a long illness. Born Aug. 2, 1935, in Beckley, he was the son of the late William Scott and Odessa Holland Brown. Mr. Scott was a U.S. Postal Service employee in Beckley for 17 years and was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force. He was on the executive board of the Raleigh County Crime Stoppers, served as state legislative director for Postal Workers Union and was active in the Democratic Party. Mr. Scott was an avid bowler, a notary public and a member of Central Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by two brothers, William B. Scott and James Scott; and his grandmother, Lucinda Holland. Survivors include his wife, Ann Haskins Scott; two daughters, Joyce Scott of Hempstead, N.Y., and Yvonne Scott of Greensboro, N.C.; three sons, William Scott Jr. of Beckley, Ronald Scott of Atlanta and Joseph Scott of Beckley; three grandchildren, Ciara-Ann Scott, Amanda Scott and Aaron Scott; a sister, Betty Harris of Anchorage, Alaska; and a host of relatives and friends.
