Register Herald Obituaries for September 26, 1999 Goldie Christine Abner Goldie Christine Johnston Abner, 57, of Stanaford, died Friday, Sept. 24, 1999, in a Beckley hospital following a long illness. Born March 14, 1942, in Arista, she was a daughter of the late Austin and Effie Mills Shrewsbury. Mrs. Abner was a homemaker and of the Baptist faith. She was a resident of Beckley for 16 years. Survivors include her husband, William Abner; a son, Shawn W. Abner and his wife, Ian, of Fairmont; a daughter, Teresa C. Lester and her husband, Cliff, of Shady Spring; two stepsons, William "Billy" Abner and his wife, Becky, of Josephine and Donnie Abner of Eccles; four brothers, Arthur James Shrewsbury and his wife, Betty, of Basin, Jack Shrewsbury and his wife, Joetta, of Basin, Ceberd Shrewsbury and his wife, Kathy, of Basin and Russell Shrewsbury and his wife, Debra, of Mossy; three sisters, Gracie Foley and her husband, Warren, of Besoco, Caroline Johnson of Melrose Park, Ill., and Ethel Gibson and her husband, William "Con," of Maben; three grandchildren, Crystal Cochran of Shady Spring, Joshua Lester of Shady Spring and Erin Abner of Fairmont; and nine stepgrandchildren. Services will be 1 p.m. Monday at Blue Ridge Funeral Home Chapel, Beckley, with the Rev. Ruth Goins officiating. Burial will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Beckley. Friends may call 6 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home. Tracy Foley, Dwight Shrewsbury, Hank Gibson, Tim Shrewsbury, Wayne Shrewsbury and Lacy Foley will serve as pallbearers. Arrangements by Blue Ridge Funeral Home, Beckley. Hubert H. Dean Hubert H. Dean, 73, of Grandview, went home to be with Jesus on Thursday, Sept. 23, 1999. Born Oct. 6, 1925, he was the son of the late Gordon and Mildred Varney Dean. Mr. Dean was a member of the Church of God Family Worship Center, MacArthur, and a retired chief electrician with Consolidation Coal Co. and Island Creek Coal Co. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and a POW during World War II. He was preceded in death by a brother, James Dean. Survivors include his wife of 51 years, Bernice Faye Daniel Dean; a son, Roger Dean and his wife, Debbie, of Grandview; four daughters, JoAnn French and her husband, Roy, of Daniels, Connie Richardson and her husband, Sam, of Pearisburg, Va., Gina Phlegar and her husband, David, of Grandview and Kimberly Franklin and her husband, Richard, of Grandview; four brothers and four sisters, all from out of town; 10 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Services will be 3 p.m. today at the Church of God Family Worship Center, MacArthur, with the Rev. Mark Schrade officiating. Burial will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Beckley. Military graveside rites will be conducted by Midway VFW Post No. 4326. Friends may call 1:30 to 3 p.m. today at the church. Friends of the family will serve as pallbearers. Viola Meador Viola Meador, 70, of Mabscott, died at 10:45 p.m. Friday, Sept. 24, 1999, at Charleston Area Medical Center, Memorial Division, following a short illness. Born July 19, 1929, at Surveyor, she was the daughter of the late Charlie L. and Nora Clay Addison. Mrs. Meador was a homemaker, a member of Sprague Freewill Baptist Church and a Mabscott resident for 25 years. She was preceded in death by her husband, David Ralph Meador Sr.; a son, David Ralph Meador Jr.; and a grandson, Gene Ray Harris. Survivors include two sons, Clarence Meador and his wife, Nancy, of Stanaford and Roger Meador and his wife, Donna, of Mabscott; two daughters, Geneva Barr and her husband, Clayton, of Beckley and Sandra Meador of Mabscott; a brother, Charlie L. Addison Jr. and his wife, Ruby, of Bellbrook, Ohio; five sisters, Ruby Cochran and her husband, Donald, of Sprague, Lamona Woods of Mabscott, Estella Reid of Mabscott, Mildred King and her husband, Don, of Conway, S.C., and Clara Robinette and her husband, Coy, of Virginia; 13 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren. Services will be 11 a.m. Monday at Rose and Quesenberry Peace Chapel, Beckley, with the Rev. Fred Lovell officiating. Burial will follow at Sunset Memorial Park, Beckley. Friends may call 6 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home. Pallbearers will be Kimberly Norris, David Meador, Gary Harris, Clayton Barr, Danny Bailey, Shane Meador and Joseph Becker.
