Register Herald Obituaries for September 27, 1999 Lola Meadows Arthur Lola Meadows Arthur, 85, of Jumping Branch, died 11 a.m. Sunday, Sept. 26, 1999, in Beckley Appalachian Regional Hospital following a long illness. Born Sept. 11, 1914, in Dunns, she was the daughter of the late Fred and Minnie Skelton Meadows. Mrs. Arthur was a homemaker of Baptist faith and lived most of her life in Jumping Branch. Besides her parents, Mrs. Arthur was preceeded in death by one son, Jarrett Arthur, and three brothers Vacie, Woodrow, and Isador Meadows. Survivors include her husband, Jacob Arthur; one daughter, Geraldine Hogue and husband John of Richmond, Va.; one brother, Vesker Meadows, and his wife Garnet of Jumping Branch; two sisters, Zettie Young of Shady Springs, and Mildred Tolliver and her husband Stephen of Cool Ridge; one great-grand daughter, Maggie Hogue of Richmond, Va.; several nieces, nephews, and special friends. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Bluestone Baptist Church in Jumping Branch, with Pastor Bill Fox officiating. Burial will follow in the Restwood Memorial Gardens in Hinton. Fizer GRASSY MEADOWS ­ Charlie William Fizer, 81, died Thursday, Sept. 23, 1999, in a Rupert care center following a long illness. Born March 16, 1918, in Maitland, he was the son of the late Daniel and Claudia Lyons Fizer. Mr. Fizer was a member of the Meadow Grove Baptist Church and was a retired miner. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Allene Fizer; a daughter, Patricia SantaRita; two brothers, Dan and Harry Fizer; and four sisters, Thelma, EveLynn, Mabel and Una. Survivors include two sons, Joshua P. Fizer of Grassy Meadows and Charlie Fizer and his wife, Darlene, of Asbury, Iowa; two daughters, Sharon O. Holliday and her husband Chris of Troutville, Va., and Karen M. Malott and her husband Allen, of Arcanum, Ohio; two stepsons, Joseph Reed of Rupert and Timothy Reed and his wife Sheila, of Lansing, Ill.; two sisters, Louise Richards of Bluefield and Ruby Short of St. Albans; nine grandchildren, Christina and Stephanie Holliday, Michael, Kelli and Sean Malott, Dana and Jeff SantaRita, and Sherry and Christie Fizer; and six stepgrandchildren, Amanda, Sarah, Rachel, Jacob, Jamie and Sharon Reed. Earl 'Price' Griffith Earl "Price" Griffith, 64, of Bradley, formerly of Lochgelly, died Saturday, Sept. 25, 1999, at his home following a short illness. Born Dec. 17, 1934 in Lochgelly, he was the son of the late Connie and Mamie Tucker Griffith. Mr. Griffith was a retired coal miner, having worked at No. Coal Co. and Calvert Coal Co. He was a member of the Bradley Freewill Baptist Church and of UMWA District No. 29. Survivors include three sisters, Ernestine Bowyer of Brookpark, Ohio, Edna Mae Rzucidlo of Strongsville, Ohio, and Patsy Lenzer of Cleveland, Ohio; five brothers, Connie Griffith and Eugene P. Griffith, both of Bradley, Jesse Griffith of Oak Hill, Michael Griffith and Donnie Griffith, both of Minden. Services will be 10 a.m. Tuesday at Bradley Freewill Baptist Church, with the Rev. Mike Gruno Mike Gruno, 87, of Beckley, formerly of Tams, died Friday, Sept. 24, 1999, in a Beckley hospital following a long illness. Born May 1, 1912, in Tams, he was the son of the late Alexander and Anna Wrona Gruno. Mr. Gruno was a retired store clerk and a member of the MacArthur Church of God for 41 years. He was also a member of the Degree of Honor Protective Association. Survivors include a brother, Sam Gruno of Union, N.J.; a sister, Mary Gonzalez of Beckley; two nephews, George Gruno and his wife Maria of Union, N.J., and Wayne Alexander Gruno and his wife Linda of Randolph, N.J.; two nieces, Patricia Santos and her husband Michael of Holmdel, N.J., and Carole Asymkos and her husband Charles of Coral Springs, Fla. Services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at MacArthur Church of God Worship Center with Pastor Otis Clyburn and Pastor Mark Shrade officiating. Burial will follow in Sunset Memorial Park, Beckley. Grover Lee Gwinn Grover Lee Gwinn, 72, of Rosenhayn, N.J., died Saturday afternoon, Sept. 25, 1999, at the Newcomb Medical Center in Vineland, N.J. Born in Meadow Bridge, the son of the late Lake and Esta Gwinn, he was the husband of Maxine Kincaid Gwinn. Before his retirement 20 years ago, he had been employed with the Kimble Glass Co. in Vineland for 19 years and before that had worked in the Donagan Coal Mines in West Virginia. Mr. Gwinn was a veteran of the Korean conflict serving with the U.S. Army and was with the occupation forces in Japan after World War II. He was a member of the First Wesleyan Church in Upper Deerfield Township, N.J., and the Wesleyan Men's Club. He also belonged to the Vineland Moose Lodge and the American Legiona Shoemaker Post No. 95, Bridgeton, N.J. Besides his wife, he is survived by three sons, David L. Gwinn of Rosenhayn, N.J., Angelo R. Gwinn of Hopewell Township, N.J., and Dennis G. Gwinn of Grand Rapids, Mich.; two daughters, Wanda G. DuBois of Upper Deerfield Township and Rosalind E. Spragg of Egg Harbor Township, N.J.; one brother, Olen Gwinn of Meadow Bridge; six sisters, Irene Gwinn of White Sulphur, Viola Sifers and Macie Hinson both of Meadow Bridge, Gracie Dotson of Bradley, Blanche Martin of Rupert, and Vergie Callision of San Jose, Calif. He is also survived by five grandchildren. He was preceeded in death by three brothers and four sisters. Services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at First Wesleyan Church, 200 W. Boothe Meadows, 78, of Peterstown, died Saturday, Sept. 25, 1999, in a Rich Creek, Va., nursing home. Born June 20, 1921, in Peterstown, she was a daughter of the late Charles and Myrtle Schultz Boothe. Mrs. Meadows was a homemaker, former employee of the Monroe County Board of Education, former member of the Ladies Fire Aid Auxiliary with the Peterstown Volunteer Fire Department, former member of Extension Homemakers, and a member of Peterstown United Methodist Church. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, James D. "Brownie" Meadows; and two brothers, Oather and Charles Boothe. Survivors include three sons, Charlie Meadows and wife Duane of Marietta, Ga., Don Meadows and wife Becky of Goodview, Va., and Pete Meadows and wife Brenda of Rustburg, Va.; two daughters, Frances Pence and husband Richard of Lindside, and Sally Illavsa and husband Tom of Morgantown; five brothers, Ed and Carl Boothe of Peterstown, David and Richard Boothe of Aiken, S.C., and John A. Boothe of Lindside; two sisters, Nellie Tabor and Florence Wilson both of Narrows, Va.; six grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. Weeks Jennings Wilford Weeks, 84, of Charlottesville, Va., formerly of East Rainelle, died Saturday, Sept. 25, 1999, in Elder Care Gardens in Charlottesville following a long illness. Born May 1, 1915, in Raleigh, W.Va., he was the son of the late George Thompson Weeks and Minnie Belle Michaels Longyear. He served in the U.S. Army Corps during World War II and was a retired cabinetmaker. He is survived by his wife, Rosalee Sanford Weeks; a son, Dale Weeks of Louisville, Ky.; two stepsons, Lacy Weeks of Christiansburg, Va., and Leonard Weeks of Ruckersville, Va.; three sisters, Doris Beard of Port George, Fla., Macy Legg of Oak Hill, and Virginia Montko of Florida; five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
