Born March 16, 1912, in Summers County, she was the daughter of the late Robert L. and Nannie Frances Palmer. Mrs. Allen was an employee of Hinton Hospital, a member of Freedom Baptist Church, Powleys Creek, and of the Mission Circle at the church. She was a member of the Silver Leaf Chapter of the Order of Eastern Star, a member of the Hinton Senior Citizens and a lifelong resident of Summers County. She was preceded in death by her husband, Jasper Jackson Allen, in 1993; a daughter, Ardella Meadows; seven brothers; and three sisters. Survivors include two sons, Jacob Allen and his wife, June, of Hinton and Thomas J. Allen of Hinton; a daughter, Barbara J. Young of Oak Hill; nine grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren. Ayers Mary Magdalena Ayers, 88, of Beckley, went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, Sept. 28, 1999, at a Beckley hospital following a short illness. Born June 24, 1911, in Stanaford, she was the daughter of the late Eugene and Mary Biggs Cawley. Mrs. Ayers was a homemaker, loving mother and of the Baptist faith. She was a lifelong resident of Beckley. She was preceded in death by her husband, James Curtis Ayers; a son, James Erskin Ayers; four sisters; and a brother. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family. Survivors include four daughters, Anna Louise Harper of Ripley, Mary Elizabeth Creed and her husband, Jim, of Prosperity, Billy Jane Weidensall and her husband, John, of Port Richey, Fla., and Beulah Eileen Bower and her husband, Mick, of Evans; 11 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren. Boyd, 81, of Crab Orchard, died Sunday, Sept. 26, 1999, in a Beckley hospital following a long illness. Born Dec. 25, 1917, in Pratt, Kanawha County, she was the daughter of the late Joseph Anthony Moore and Emma Frances Adkins Moore. Mrs. Boyd was a homemaker, a member of Glen View Holiness Church and a resident of Crab Orchard for more than 50 years. She was preceded in death by her husband, Maynard Boyd, in 1982. Survivors include a brother, Desper Moore of Beckley; two half brothers, the Rev. John Martin and his wife, Janet, of Mabscott and George Martin of Cabell Heights; a half sister, Hazel Scott of Beckley; a stepsister, Delcie Beam of Beckley; and several nieces and nephews. Caldwell CYCLONE ­ Virgie Ann Caldwell, 82, died Sunday, Sept. 26, 1999, at the home of her daughter, Geraldine Horton in Euclid, Ohio, following a long illness. Born June 10, 1917, in Logan County, she was the daughter of Mary Ethel Ratliff of Mallory and the late C.C. Ratliff. Mrs. Caldwell was a homemaker, a lifelong resident of Wyoming County and a member of Campus Church of God. She was preceded in death by her husband of 50 years, Walter Thomas Caldwell; a daughter, Donna Faye Ratliff; two sons, Tom Jr. and Richard Caldwell; and two brothers, Orville and Randolph Ratliff. Born Sept. 21, 1938, in Kilsyth, she was the daughter of Letha Gregory of Shady Spring and the late Charles A. Gregory. Other survivors include her husband, James T. Clemons; a son, James C. Clemons of Tucson; four sisters, Mary E. Davis of Mabscott, Annabell Stanley and Martha Todd, both of Georgia, and Toni McKinney of Idaho; three brothers, Frank Gregory of Arizona, Douglas A. Gregory 'Greg' Daniels COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. ­ Gregory Miley "Greg" Daniels, 51, formerly of Beckley, died Sunday, Sept. 26, 1999, in Colorado following a short illness. Born Sept. 7, 1948, in Jesse, he was the son of Quinnie Adams Daniels Baldwin of Matheny and the late William T. Daniels. Mr. Daniels spent his childhood at Jesse and graduated as salutatorian in the 1966 class of Oceana High School. He graduated in 1970 from West Virginia University with a bachelor's of science degree in civil engineering. He was a 21-year resident of Beckley before moving to Colorado in 1995. He worked for Eastern Associated Coal Corp. as the resident mining engineer from 1971 to 1973. Since August 1973 he had been an employee of Westmoreland Coal Co. He held various positions with Westmoreland, including assistant chief engineer, assistant to the manager of mines, assistant to the general manager and civil engineer and president of the Hampton Division. He most recently held the position of president of the Virginia Division and vice president of human resources at the corporate office in Colorado Springs. Mr. Daniels was a registered professional surveyor in the state of West Virginia and a registered professional mining engineer in West Virginia, Virginia and Colorado. He was a member of the Colorado Mining Association, Rocky Mountain Coal Mining Institute, West Virginia Coal Mining Institute, West Virginia Society of Professional Engineers, National Society of Professional Engineers and the West Virginia University Alumni Association. He served the Beckley area as president of the Mabscott-Pleasant Hills Lions Club, was a member of the Board of Directors of the Beckley-Raleigh County YMCA, president of the Woodrow Wilson Baseball Boosters, chairman of the Program Committee for the 1990 Project Graduation and was a member of United Methodist Temple. Other survivors include his wife of 30 years, Peggy Lee Cochran Daniels; two sons, Scott Daniels and his wife, Jennifer, of Cincinnati and Chris Daniels and his wife, Tonia, of Beckley; a brother, Danny Daniels and his wife, Theresa, of Lynco; a sister, Joetta Acord and her husband, Ronald, of Gassaway; nieces and nephews, Amy, Shawn, Jonathan, Will and Melodi; and his mother-in-law, Margaret Cochran of Beckley. Ermel Afton Hess FAYETTEVILLE ­ Ermel Afton Hess, 75, died Monday, Sept. 27, 1999, at his home following a long illness. Born Jan. 1, 1924, in Fayetteville, he was the son of the late Bartley L. and Maud Legg Hess. Mr. Hess was a retired hydro plant operator for Union Carbide at Alloy. He was a member of Fayetteville United Methodist Church, a charter member of Fayetteville American Legion Post 149 and past post commander. He helped organize Fayetteville Little League, worked with the Fayette County Fair and was a former assistant chief of the Fayetteville Fire Department. He was a staff sergeant in the U.S. Army Signal Corps and a World War II veteran. He was preceded in death by a brother, Billy Joe Hess. Survivors include his wife, Jean Underwood Hess; two sons, Larry J. Hess and his wife, Linda, of Fayetteville and Michael S. Jones William Alfred Jones, 76, of 3353 Grandview Road, Beaver, died at 11:10 a.m. Monday, Sept. 27, 1999, in a Beckley hospital following an apparent heart attack. Born Oct. 20, 1922, in Atkins, Va., he was the son of the late Lula Mae Jones. Mr. Jones was a retired insurance agent, owner and operator of Jones Insurance Agency and was a former salesman for Huntington Barber and Beauty Supply. He was a U.S. Navy veteran and had served as a civilian welder at the shipyards. He was an active member and deacon of Memorial Baptist Church, Beckley, and was in the Disciple Bible Class. Mr. Jones was a 26-year resident of the Grandview Road area. He was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed fishing. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Roscoe and Kelmer Martin; and a sister, Clairie Martin. Born March 11, 1916, in Hominy Falls, he was the son of the late W.E. and Annie Boley McCutcheon. Mr. McCutcheon had lived at Canvas since 1956. He was a member of Olive Branch Baptist Church, Nettie. He raised cattle and was a farmer all his life. He was a World War II U.S. Army veteran, a member of the UMWA and had worked in the coal mines for 40 years and retired from Westmoreland Coal Co. Mrs. Taylor was a member of Sprague Freewill Baptist Church, member of the Teamsters Union and was retired from Giant Food Corp., Washington. Following her retirement, she returned to Beckley where she had lived for the past 30 years.
