(This was probably the Veterans Administration Center since Mr. Vest was a World War I veteran.) He was a retired farmer and a member of the Little Bluestone Primitive Baptist Church. Mr. Vest was a long-time resident of White Oak Mountain in Raleigh County. He was a son of Columbus Washington "Lum" Vest and wife Malinda Cochran Vest. He was survived by a brother, Ethiel B. Vest. Additional Comments: Followup obituary: Raleigh Register, May 15, 1961. Sanford Walter Vest's nickname was "Samp." He was a very devout man who was devoted to his church, the Little Bluestone Primitive Baptist Church. His grandniece Eva Smith said, "We all remember Uncle Sanford as a man with a deep personal relationship with God. He lived with my family when I was a tiny girl and I still have the impression 50-some years later that this was the only true saint I will ever meet. It wasn’t what he said or even what he did. Sanford just had this 'aura' that even a little girl picked up on. Sanford would take a walk each evening. I wanted to tag along but he would shoo me away. One winter day when the snow was very deep, he only walked a short way into the wood. I saw him kneeling in prayer. These were his private times with God."
