Obituary For Robert Thomas Wilson, 1840-1925 Beckley, Raleigh County, WVA Friday, October 2, 1925 (He died September 28, 1925) AGED SWEENEYBURG RESIDENT IS DEAD ROBERT THOMAS WILSON, CONFEDERATE VETERAN, DEAD AT HIS HOME MONDAY, AGED 85 ************ Robert Thomas Wilson, one of the oldest residents of Raleigh county, though not a native of this section, died on Monday last at his home near Sweeney- burg, having attained the advanced age of 85 years. He had been in failing health during recent months, but nevertheless his death was a shock to his many friends in the county. Born August 5th, 1840, Mr. Wilson came to Raleigh county shortly after the war between the States, in which he had participated on the Confederate side, In 1865 and a year later married Miss Sarah Stanley, who survives him. Since that time he has been a resident of Raleigh county and has claimed it as his home. He was born in Caswell county, N.C. Mr. Wilson served throughout the entire four years of the war and made one of General Lee's most gallant soldiers. He was still with his general at the close of the war at Appomattox and participated in the battles of Manassas, Antietam, Cedar Creek, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, Gettys- burg, and many other of the famous battles which took place during the four years of hostilities. He was well known in the section in which he made his home and was a Christian, loved and honored by a wide circle of relatives and friends. Besides his wife he is survived by the following children: G.F. Wilson, Lorenzo Wilson, Miss Eunice, Mrs. Ava Ward, and Mrs. Anna Beckleheimer. A large number of grandchildren are also living. Funeral services were conducted Wednesday at the Sweeneyburg Church. Rev. J.L. Lineweaver, of Beckley, conducted the services. A tremendous crowd of sorrowing friends and relatives who attended the funeral testified to the esteem in which he was held. ************** Robert Thomas Wilson was listed as a private in the war records. He resided in Alamance Co., NC, prior to enlisting at the age of 20 on June 21, 1861 for the war. He was presented and accounted for until paroled at Burksville Junction, Va, April 14-17, 1865 ______NC Troops 1861-1865 Inf. Vol. 4. He was listed as a private with Co. K 6th N.C. Inf on muster roll June 20th August 31, 1861 at Camp Alamance, N.C. His grandaughter, Roberta Wilson Farley said he fought at Gettysburg.
