Leonard Haliburton Vest as a young man.

Leonard Haliburton Vest (27 Nov 1880/20 Mar 1960) was a son of Columbus
Washington (Lum) Vest and his wife Malinda Jane Cochran of White Oak Mountain in
Raleigh County, W.Va. Leonard and his first wife Clara Plumley had a son Claude
Raymond (Claudie) Vest (21 Nov 1901/08 Dec 1961). Clara died in childbirth.
Leonard married Emma Stella Gadd (23 May 1879/24 Jan 1965) on 11 Jun 1907.
Stella had a son, Dewey Abshire Anderson Via (12 Jan 1902/12 Sep 1936) with her
first husband James Anderson Elmer Via (04 Jan 1877/21 Nov 1902), who was killed
in a timber accident. Together they had eight children: sons Claude and Dewey
and six daughters, Verna, Golda, Nina, Sylvia, Josephine and Ola. Sylvia and
Josephine died in childhood of diphtheria. Leonard and Stella lived most of
their married life on White Oak Mountain. Leonard farmed and worked outside a
coal mine hauling timber.
