Emma Stella Gadd was born May 23, 1879, in Pipestem, Summers County, W.Va., a
daughter of Powell Wade Gadd and his wife Emma Melissa Martin. Stella died Jan.
24, 1965, in the White Oak Mountain home of her daughter Golda Smith in Raleigh
County, W.Va.  

This photo was probably taken around the time of her marriage to first husband
James Anderson Elmer Via (04 Jan 1877/21 Nov 1902) on 06 Nov 1900. There is a
picture of Anderson with the same background. Anderson and Stella had a son
Dewey Abshire Anderson Via. After Anderson was killed in a timber accident,
Stella married Leonard Haliburton Vest (27 Nov 1880/20 Mar 1960). Leonard and
his first wife, Clara Plumley, who died in childbirth, had a son Claude
(Claudie) Raymond Vest. Leonard and Stella lived most of their married life on
White Oak Mountain. Together they had eight children: sons Claude and Dewey and
six daughters, Verna, Golda, Nina, Sylvia, Josephine and Ola. Sylvia and
Josephine died in childhood of diphtheria.
