Sterling, Iowa Respected Madam: I send you the Elkins News. A paper printed seven miles below Beverly, Randolph County, West Virginia. I am corespondent for the paper and live on Roaring Creek, Randolph, West Va. Your brother George Washington Kittle, died here Saturday, April 22, 1899. He had been sick all winter. He died from the effects of LaGrippe. He was 73 years and 24 days old. He was intered at the mouth of Roaring Creek at John K. Scott's Mills. Maybe you know where that is in the Roaring Creek Cemetery. I have an Uncle that lives in Azen, Missouri. Maybe you know him. His name is Jackson Phillips, my name is Claude Phillips, oldest son of Moses J. Phillips. My father's name was Moses J. Phillips, Jr. My mother's maden name was Margaret Scott. You know them, I have heard them talk of you. Roaring Creek is a great business place now, work is plenty and wages are good. Timbering and coal mining is being carried on extensively. There is two band saw mills here that cut 100,000 feet per day. About 500 tons of coal is shipped from Roaring Creek daily. All of Mr. Kittle's children were at the funeral except Mrs Elizabeth Mills. She was down with the measels and could not come out. She is all right now. Womelsdorf is situated at the Falls of Roaring Creek where Clement Tillman Hilleary lived in your day. It has about 700 people in it. Tygarts Valley News is the leading paper in Randolph County, West Va. We print the News weekly from every post office in the County. Terms $1. a year. Randolph County is the largest County in West Va. Having 1200 square miles of territory in it. There is over 100 miles of Railroads inside its boundry in your day there was no railroads here. There is 45 post offices in the County. This letter is being written at the hezekiah Kittle farm on Little Flat Bush Creek. All Hezekiah's family are dead except Smith Kittle. He lives in Upshire County. All Mr. Kittle's (family)live here in Randolph County. Eight of them live in Roaring Creek.
