McCann from his father Squire Bosworth McCann of Elkins, West Virginia to Carrington, North Dakota, where William J. McCann and his family homesteaded land. S. B. McCann Notary Public & Surveyor Alton W. Va. May 28, 1897 Wm. J. McCann family Carrington, N. D. We have not heard from you for a long time. We are well, hope you are all enjoying the same blessing. It is very cold here all this month. Frost every few days. Is it cold there? Wheat looks well here, plenty of people are not done with planting here yet. Apples are mostly killed here. We will have enough to do us if they don't fall off. Oats are very short, too cold for oats. We are now done planting. Jonas and Henry will get done today. Henry Powers has moved Elkins, Randolph County W. Va. Frank Eckert and Alice Sladwell were married in Buckhannon jail last Saturday. He is in jail for selling whiskey. Big decoration at the Church on the hill tomorrow. Geo. W Sims will be orator of the day. Times are hard here, and will be no better under the single gold standard. A.G. Griffin was going to close his works if Bryan was elected....he is now for Bryan and free silver. Old ex-Post Master General under Harrison. is for free Silver. Got his eyes open when when brains are knocked out. Grant Gould's wife left him and skipt with another fellow. Marshall Gould's wife is dead. So is Jno. Snikes.
