Philip Cox Family : Philip Cox, son of Revolutionary War veteran Philip Cox and Christiana Steele, was born July 20, 1800 in Harrison County, Virginia. Philip was a surveyor and a partner with his brother, Daniel V., in the first mercantile business on Bone Creek, which later became Auburn. In 1847 he went to Harrisville and ran the Franklin Hotel until 1852, at which time he moved to Cox's Mill in Gilmer County where he died December 19, 1876. Philip repersented both Braxton and Lewis Counties in the Virginia General Assembly. August 21, 1820, Philip married Susannah Kniseley daughter of George Kniseley and Anna Eib. Both Philip and Susannah are buried in the Alburn Cementery. Philip and Susannah were the parents of the following 10 children. 1. George Kniseley Cox b. 1822, married (1) Barbara Bush, (2) Anne Thompson Childern of George and Barbara were: 1. Albert Cox b. 1845 2. Columbia J. Cox b. 1850 George supposedly went to Iowa after second marriage. 2. Mary Catherine Cox b. August 29, 1823 d.January 10, 1863, married Rev. Elisha Snodgrass. 3. John Sutton Cox b. 1825, married Mary Hambrick and their childern were: 1. William Cox b. 1850 2. Ellen Cox b. 1852 3. Rose Cox b. 1855 John went to Kansas City. 4. Isaac Newton Cox b. 1829, married Sarefta Snider and their only child was: 1. Betty Cox b. abt 1870 5. Elizabeth Ann Cox b. August 5, 1831, d. April 11, 1894, married Anthony Waggoner. 6. Philip Clark Cox b. 1833, d. 1847 7. Oliver Perry Cox b. 1837, he married Sarah E. Kniseley and their 6 children were: 1. George Cox b. 1865 2. Franz Cox b. 1868 3. Isaac Perry Cox b. 1870 4. Susie Cox b. 1872 5. Ira D. Cox b. 1873 6. Roy Oliver Cox b. 1878 8. Daniel Wirt Cox b. April 27, 1838, d. February 3, 1927, married Elizabeth V. Goodwin and their 12 childern: 1. Ida Susan Cox b. 1866 2. Charles John Cox b. 1867 3. Lizzie May Cox b. 1869 4. Maggie Jane Cox b. 1871 5. Francis Wirt Cox b. 1873 6. Albert Kendall Cox b. 1875 7. Clara Virginia Cox b. 1877 8. Howard Warden Cox b. 1879 9. Harvey Hamilton Cox b. 1880. 10. Martha Viola Cox b. 1884 11. Calvin Newton Morris Cox b. 1886 12. Wessley Russel b. 1889 9. Susan Josephine Cox b. 1842, she married Hamilton H. Norman and moved to Spokane Washington. 10.
