ZION U. B. E. CHURCH At the home of Nimrod Kerkendall on Cheveradefris (sic) a tributary of Indian Creek, in Ritchie county, in 8154, Rev. Eli McLaughlin organized a class composed of Nimrod Kerkendall, his wife, Mr. and Mrs. William Cokeley, Mr. and Mrs. Robert Mitchell, and others. A log church was built by Wm. Cokeley in 1858 which was called Mt. Zion U.B. and this church is now an appointment of the Harrisville Circuit of the West Virginia Conference of the E.U.B. Church, with Rev. Clyde Brammer, Jr., as pastor. The church was rebuilt in 1894 by Salem Duckworth, burned in 1932, and rebuilt in the same year by the community unedr the supervision and leadership of Walter Crane, Edmund Baker, and Stark Radcliffe. This structure still stands. Ground was donated for the first building and burial ground by Mr. and Mrs. Cokeley. Outstanding leaders in older days were the Cokeley and Duckworth families. Mr. and Mrs. Salem Duckworth are buried in the well-kept cemetery on a plot adjoining the church. Teh present membership is 16 with 11 of the total being non-resident members thus making it necessary to no longer hold Sunday School regularly. *****Submitted by Mrs. Winnifred Scott.
