Joe Hooker Post No.45, Department of West Virginia, Grand Army
of the Republic, met at Auburn and oranized that Post July 10,
1886. The following were the "By Laws" of the  Post as written
and approved by the twenty eight charter members.

     Article I - This Post shall be known as the Joe Hooker
Post No. 45, Department of W.Va.G.A.R.

     Article II - This Post shall hold its regular meetings
on the second and forth Wednesday night of each month at seven
p.m.

     Article III - The officers of this Post shall consist
as provided in article IV of the Regulations.

     Article IV - Election of officers of this Post shall be
held on the first stated meeting in December of each year.

     Article V - The duties of officers shall be as prescribed
in VII of the Regulations.

     Article VI - The application of membership shall be provided
in Chapter II art. II of the Regulations. The muster fee shall be
$1.00 and must be paid before muster in.

     Article VII - The quarterly dues of this Post shall be
thirty cents.

     Article VIII - Every member failing to pay his dues for six
months after they are due shall be suspended and no one suspended
shall be allowed to vote.

     Article IX - No money shall be appropiated except by two
thirds majority in favor of same.

     Article X - Amendments shall not be altered or amended unless
the proposition be offered in writing and lay on the table two weeks
and then by only two thirds majority.

     Article XI - This Post shall be governed by the rules of order
as provided in the Regulations.

The Post was moved to Summers Hall on May 1, 1896. The Post continued
to here until death made such sad inroads in the ranks of these Veterans
who served their country during the time of brother against brother,
as was the case of a few of these dear old veterans. The Post was closed
in 1907, its members never to meet in this world again as brothers.

The books, drums and other equipment were left to be packed and stored
away by H.C. Zinn, who was commander of the Post at that time. There I
found the old records in the hands of his widow, a dear old lady, who
was glad to let me have them.

How we wish we could hear them relate their war stories again, a few
of which, were in Southern prisons, Sherman's Raid, etc. If you want
to know the battles they were in, follow their Companies, as listed
through the war, or ask a few of the remaining veterans of the post.

The duties of the Post were to see that the graves of their comrades
were neatly decorated on Decorationd Day, their graves properly marked,
their widows properly cared for, and many others of Civic interest.
What a thrill it gave us "Young Ones" to watch these old veterans
on Decoration Day, etc., go to the different grave yards of the community,
drums beating, fifes playing and flags flying, to decorate the
graves of their comrades, or to fire a last salute over the grave
of a comrade who lost his life for the Union Cause.

The following is a list of the members of the Post, many of them
are stranges to us, yet their names may cause us greater appreciate
the works of the Post.
