On this 5th day of December A.D. one thousand eight hundred and seventy-one personally appeared before me Josephus B. Pack of the Circuit Court. A court of Record within and for the County and State aforesaid William Dequasie applicant aged eighty three years, a resident of Green Sulphur, County of Summers State of West Virginia, who being duly sworn according to law, declares that he is married: that his wife's name was Elizabeth Cary to whom he was married at Nelson County State of Virginia on or about the 12th day of November 1821 and that he served the full period of sixty days in the miltiary service of the United States in the War of 1812 that he is the identical William Duquasie who was drafted in Captain James Hugh(e)s Company in Eighth Regiment Fourth Brigade Division not recollected at Nelson [Co.] Court House on the first day of September 1813 and was honorably discharged at Camp Carter 12 miles below Richmond, Va. On the first of March 1814. That he was stationed at Camp Carter where he served out my full term of six months that he at no time during the late rebellion against the authority of the United Stated adhered to the cause of the enemies of the Government, giving them aid or comfort, or exercised the functions of any office whatever under any authority, or pretended authority, in hostility to the United States. That he will support the Constitution of the United States, that he is not in receipt of a pension under any previous act, that he makes this declaration for the purpose of being placed on the pension roll of the United States under the provisions of the act approved February 14th 1871 and he hereby constitutes and appoints, with full power of substitution and revocation Thomas J. Jones, of Summers County, his true and lawful attorney to prosecute his claim and procure this issuance of a pension certificate to him, that his post office address is Green Sulphur, County of Summers, State of West Virginia and his domicile or place of abode is Lick Creek in County and State aforesaid. William Dequasie X[his mark] Witnesses: Andrew Hix David Dick Also personally appeared Andrew Hix residing at Laurel Creek and David Dick residing at Laurel Creek persons whom I certify to be respectable and entitled to credit and who being by me duly sworn, say they were present and saw William Duquasie make his mark to the foregoing declaration, that they have any reason to believe from the appearance of said claimant and their acquaintance with him that he is identical person he represents himself to be, that at no time during the late rebellion against the authority of the United States did he adhere to the cause of the enemies of the Government giving them aid or confort and that they have no interest in the presecution of this claim. In the claim for pension of William DeQuasie, a survivor of the War of 1812, under the Act of February 14th, 1871, No. 19798, Samuel H. Withrow and E.J. Gwinn testify to the claimant's loyalty. You are required by the certificate of an officer of a United States Court, a United States Commissioner, an Assessor, Assistant Assessor, Collector, Deputy Collectcor or Supervisor of Internal Revenue, or a Postmaster, to the satisfaction of this Office that, after careful investigation, he is convinced the above witnesses are men of undoubted good character for truth and veracity, and that their statements in the affidavit referred to are worthy of full faith and credit. Va. ***************************************************************** 24 APRIL 1872 Declaration of Soldier for Pension State of West Virginia } County of Summers } ss. On this twenty fourth day of April, A.D. one thousand eight hundred and seventy two, personally appeared before me, J.B. Pack of the Circuit Court of Summers Co. a Court of Record within and for the county and State aforementioned William Dequasie, aged 84 years, a resident of Summers County, State of West Virginia, who being duly sworn according to law, declares that he is married; that his wife's name is Elizabeth / was Elizabeth Cary, to whom he was married at Nelson County, Virginia on the 12th day of November, 1820; that he served the full period of sixty days in the (1) Military service of the United States in the War of 1812; that he is the idential Wm. On this 21st day of December, A.D. one thousand eight hundred and Seventy Eight, personally appeared before me, E.H. Pack, Clerk Co. Court, the same being a court of record within and for the county and State aforesaid (1) Elizabeth Dequasie, aged 73 years, a resident of Summers Co., in the State of West Virginia, who being duly sworn according to law, declares that she is the widow of (2) William Dequasie deceased, who was the identical (3) William Dequasie who served under the name of (4) William Duquasie as a (5) private in the company commanded by Captain W.C. Scott, in the --- Regiment of --- commanded by ---, in the war of 1812; that her said husband (6) volunteered in Nelson Co., Va. On or about the --- day of ---, A.D., --- for the term of ---, and continued in actual service in said war for the term of (7) ---, and whose services terminated, by reason of (8) honorable discharge, at close of war, on the day of --- A.D. She further states that the following is a full description of her said husband at the time of his enlistment, viz: about five feet & eight inches in height, black hair and blue eyes, weight 160 pounds. She further states that she was married to the said William Dequasie in the county of Nelson, and in the State of Virginia, on the 1st day of December A.D. 1821 by one (10) Benj. Bergy[?], who was a (11) Baptist Minister; and that her name before her said marriage was Elizabeth Cary; and she further states that (12) neither her husband or herself were named to a former wife or husband and that her said husband (13) William Dequasie, died at his home in Summers Co. in the State of West Virginia, on the 21st day of September 1878, and that she has not again married; and she further declares that the following have been the places of residence of herself and her said husband since the date of his discharge from the Army, viz: (14) In Nelson Co. Va for four or five years after marriage and in Fayette Co., now Summers Co. W. Va. ever since. She makes this declaration for the purpose of obtaining the pension to which she may be entitled under Sections 4736 to 4740 (inclusive), Revised Statues, and the Act of March 9th, 1878, and hereby appoints --- of --- her true and lawful attorney, to prosecute her claim; and she further declares that she has heretofore made no application for (15) pension, and that her residence is in Green Sulphur Dist. County of Summers, State of West Virginia, and that her post-office address is Green Sulphur Springs, Summers Co. W. Va. Elizabeth Dequasie X [her mark] ATTEST: Marion Gwinn John K. Withrow Also personally appeared Marion Gwinn, aged 43 years, residing at Green Sulphur Springs Summers Co., and John K. withrow aged 42 years, residing at Green Sulphur Springs in Summers Co., persons whom I certify to be respectable and entitled to credit, and who, being by me duly sworn, say that they have known the said Elizabeth Dequasie for 25 years and for 25 years, respectively; that they were present and saw her sign her name (or make her mark) to the foregoing declaration; that they have every reason to believe, from the appearnace of said claimant and their acquaintance with her, that she is the identical person she represents herself to be; and they further say that they are able to identify her as the person who was the wife of the identical (16) William Dequasie who rendered the service alleged in the above application (in the company of Captain W. C. Scott in the war of 1812) by the following named facts and circumstances viz: (17) We were born and raised in the neighborhood of William Dequasie and well acquainted with William Dequasie and wife and that they have no interest in the prosecution of this claim. Hix, a citizen of Green Sulphur District in said County, do solemnly swear that I am in my sixty eighth year of my age, and that I was personally acquainted with William Duquasie for 38 or 39 years before his death (said Duquasie living in my neighborhood) during that time, and that his widow Elizabeth Duquasie who is an applicant for Pension &c 34.079 lived with him during that time and was recognised as his lawful wife, and that they raised seven children, viz: three sons and four daughters, and that said Elizabeth Dequasie has not married since the death of her husband, and that I have no interest in this matter, given under my hand this 25th day of Feby 1879. And I hereby certify that I am personally acquainted with John Hix and know him to be a gentleman of truth and that his statements are worthy of credibility. Va. ************************************************************** 25 FEB 1879 State of West Virginia County of Summers I, E.J. Gwinn a citizen of Green Sulphur District in said County and State do solemnly swear that I am eighty years of age on the 16th day of June next and that I was personally acquainted with William Duquasie for fifty years prior to his death which occurred on 21st Sept 1878, (said Duquasie living within 1-1/2 miles of me during that time) and that said William Duquasie and Elizabeth his wife lived together and was recognized as man and wife and raised seven children viz: three sons and four daughters, and that said Elizabeth Duquasie has not remarried since her said husband's death. And further that I have no interest whatsoever in this matter. E.J. Gwinn [signed] Subscribed and sworn to before me this 25th day of Feby, 1879. And I certify that I am personally acquainted with E.J. Gwinn and know that he is a gentleman of undoubted veracity and that his statements are worthy of credibility, and further that I have no interest in presecution of this claim. Va. ******************************************************* 1 MAR 1879 State of West Virginia County of Summers I, John A. Richmond, Post Master at New Richmond in said County and State, do solemnly swear that I am 45 years of age, and that I was personally acquainted with William Duquasie, deceased, from my youth up to the time of his death (having been raised in same neighborhood where Duquasie lived and having boarded with him while going to school) and know that said Duquasie and his wife Elizabeth Duquasie lived together during that time as man and wife, and that said Duquasie died on 21st day of Sept 1878, and that said Elizabeth Duquasie has not since remarried, and further that I have no interest in this matter. Given under my hand this 1st day of March 1879. John A. Richmond [signed] Subscribed and sworn to before me this 1st day of March 1879, and further certify that I am personally acquainted with Jno A. Richmond, P.M. at New Richmond and know that he is a gentleman whose evidence is in every way worthy of credit and further that I have no interest in this matter. Pack of the Circuit Court. **************************************************************** 28 FEB 1879 State of West Virginia County of Summers I, Elizabeth Duquasie of the County and State aforesaid do solemnly swear that I am the widow of William Duquasie, dec'd. whose name was inscribed on the Pension Rolls of the United States, as pension No. 17.138, and that said William Duquasie and myself were married in Nelson Co. Va. about the years 1821 or 1822, and that we shortly afterward moved to what is now Summers Co. W. Va., that my parents and the minister who married us are all dead, that I have no family bond to show when we were married, and have no further way of producing proof of our said marriage than by the evidence of persons who have lived near us for last 40 or 50 years, or by the testimony of my seven living children, I further swear that my said husband died on 21st Sept 1878.
