Moody Vest died April 29, 1992, at Sweet Springs after a short illness. He was born Feb. 2, 1914, at Jumping Branch, a son of Luther Wilson Vest and Georgia Simmons Vest. He lived most of his life in Jumping Branch and was a nine-year Sweet Springs resident. Mr. Vest was a former mail carrier. Additional Comments: His full name was Joseph Moody Vest but he was always known as Moody. He carried the mail across White Oak Mountain in Summers and Raleigh counties in West Virginia. Mr. Vest was an important fixture in everyone’s daily life. A frequent question was, “Has Moody gone yet?” And if you missed the bus and needed to go to Hinton, you could “catch a ride with Moody.” His truck can be seen in a postcard (Main St., Showing Post Office, Jumping Branch, W.Va.) in “Postcard History Series - Summers County in Vintage Postcards” produced by the Summers County Historical Society, 2005, Arcadia Publishing (ISBN 0-7385-4151-6), Page 103. The caption: “Jumping Branch, Main Street, Showing The Post Office. The c. 1966 pickup was used by Moody Vest, who carried the mail from Hinton to Shady Spring. His father, Luther Vest, carried the mail in a buggy. The postmistress at the time this picture was taken was Iva Dodd. The post office building was once a restaurant. Barely showing in the right of the picture is the grist mill owned by Frank Dodd, unused at this time. In the background are two white store buildings, which were for many years the general store of J.S. Walker.
