Fletcher (b. May 13, 1810; d. May 14, 1905) Nancy J. Fletcher, who was probably the oldest citizen of Tyler County, passed away Sunday (May 14, 1905) at the home of her son, D. H. Fletcher. She was 95 years old. She was born in Pennsylvania on May 13, 1810, a daughter of David Johnson, who was wounded and died during the war of 1812, leaving her an orphan at the tender age of two years. At the age of fifteen, she married Hugh Underwood, of Shirley. They resided in Wheeling where two children, Joseph and L. H. were born. Both are now dead. L. H., who was a Union Soldier, having died at Grafton where his body still rests. Her first husband died at Wheeling, and in 1832 she became the wife of John F. Fletcher who passed away December 8, 1898. To this union several children were born: Vincent; James; William K.; John; David H.; Clamenza; and Elizabeth. Five of whom preceeded her many years ago, leaving David H. of Middlebourne and Mrs. Elizabeth McCale of Waverly still alive. Mrs. Fletcher's descendants are numerous, having grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and what is more unusual, having lived to see two great-great-grandchildren. In early life she joined the Baptist Church and always lived a faithful and consistent Christian life. In November of 1991, she suffered a paralytic stroke and never afterward walked, and this finally caused her death. Her remains were laid to rest Monday at 2 o'clock in the Henderson Cemetery with services conducted by Rev. L. D. Ashby in the presence of relatives and sympathizing friends.
