M. Currence and Elizabeth Tenney, residents of said County, ages 59 and 35 respectively, persons whom I certify to be respectfully and entitled to credit; who being duly sworn say that they were personally accquainted with Wm. McCan the late husband of the said Claimant Sarah Ann McCan, and that the said William McCan Died in the County of Randolph, West Virginia on the second day of October, 1854; that they were present at the Burial of the said McCan, and that they have no interest in said Claim for Pension. Benson *************************** The Claim of Widow for Pension War Of 1812 - under the provisions of Sections 4736 to 4740, inclusive: revised statutes , and the Act Of March 9, 1878 State of West Virginia, County of Upshur,ss. On this 6 day of October, A.D. One Thousand eight hundred and seventy nine, personally appeared before me, R.G.H. Benson, a Justice of the Peace within and for the County and State aforesaid, Mrs Sarah Ann McCan, aged 80 years, a resident of Upshur County and State of West Virginia, who, being duly sworn according to law, declares that she is the widow of William McCan, who served under the name of William McCan, as a Private in the Company commanded by Captain John Bodkin's Company of Rifle Volunteers from Pendleton County, Virginia War of 1812. The applicant does not now recollect when her husband Volunteered, but knows he volunteered for 6 months or during the War, also that his service terminated by reason of the close of the War about the year of 1814 or 1815 having served more than 111 days. The following is a full description of her said husband at the time of his volunteering (to wit) about 22 years of age, about 6 feet high, rather slender; dark brown hair, blue eyes; fair complexion; by occupation a farmer. She further states that she was married to the said William McCan, in the County of Augusta, in the State of Virginia, on the ...day of March, 1815. by one Morgan, who was a Minister in the M.E. Church, and that her name before her marriage was Sarah Ann Lanham, and that neither her, nor her husband was ever previously married, and that her said husband William McCan died in the County of Randolph, West Virginia on the second day of October 1854, and that she kas not again married.: the following have been the chief places of residence of her and her said husband since the date of his leaving the service. Pendleton, Monroe, and Randolph Counties, Virginia.. Since her husband's death in 1854. She has resided a part of the time in the State of Ohio, a part of the time in Upshur County West Virginia, where she now resides. Her Post Office address is Queens, formerly Grims Store. She makes this application for the purpose of obtaining the pension to which she may be entitled to under section 4736 to 4740 (inclusive) revised statute , and the Act of March 1, 1878, and hereby assigns Henry G Westfahl of Buckhannon P.O. Upshur County, West Virginia , her true and lawful attorney, to prosecute this, her claim, and she further declares that she is not in receipt of a pension. Nether has she ever to her recollection filed an application thereof, and that she has recollection of ever an application being filed for Bounty Land Warrant under the Act of 1850 or 1855. If there has been any Warrant received by her said husband, she desires the said Land Warrant issued to her, under said Acts. She further states that she does not consider herself able to go to a Court of Records to make her Declaration in consequence of poor health, being infirm, and eyesight poor, residing some 13 miles from the Court House, roads rough,, etc. Ateste - Sarah Ann (her mark) McCan Signed: Grainger A Lamb (signature) Signed: Samuel McCan (Signature) Also, personally appeared, Grainger A. Lamb, a resident of Upshur County and Samuel McCan, a resident of the same place, both of Queens, Post Office, ages 60 and 63 years, persons therin I certify to be respectable and entitled to credit. Also, who, being by me duly sworn, say that they were present, and saw the said Sarah Ann McCan sign her name to the foregoing declaration; by making her mark thereto. That they have every reason to believe from the appearance of said Claimant, and their acquaintance with her, that she is the identical person she represents herself to be, and they further say they are able to identify her as the person who was the wife of the identical William McCan (who they have been informed) rendered the alleged service in the above application in the Company of John Bodkin, War of 1812, having known the said Wm. McCan and Sarah Ann McCan to live together as man and wife for some over 40 years and so resided and lived together as man and wife up to the death of the said William McCan; and further that they have no interest in her said Claim for Pension, and that she has not remarried since the death of her said husband but still remains his widow.
