Obituary of Jefferson Bowen Workman, 1942 - Wayne Co. WV Delta Republic, Buckhannon, W.Va. Friday August 7, 1942. A half century of the ministry in the Methodist church ended Thursday with the sudden death of the Rev. Dr. J.B. Workman, 74, of Barbour Street, this city. He retired from active duty in September of last year. A native of West Virginia, Dr. Workman was born at Wayne, a son of the late Alderson and Rebecca Workman, on Jan.28,1868. He spent his entire ministry in the state, except for five years which he was pastor of the Methodist Church at Oakland, Md. Dr. Workman began the ministry in Wayne, then at Davis, to Wesley Methodist Church in Wheeling; served eight years as superintendent of the Buckhannon District of the West Virginia Conference; served six years next at Mannington, then to the Central Church at Charleston for six more years, then to Wheeling and from there to Mannington four years ago. On Aug.1,1941, as pastor of the Mannington Church, he observed the fiftieth anniversary of his entry into the ministry. Dr. Workman led two drives in the Buckhannon District, one for the West Virginia Weslyean College centenary and one for the permanent trust fund for retired ministers. In 1912 he was a delegate to the General Conference of the Church at Minneapolis and twice since was elected as reserve delegate. He served four years as secretary of the West Virginia Conference and many years as trustee of West Virginia Weslyean College, where he received his degree. Dr, Workman married Grace Wellman and they observed their fiftieth wedding anniversary in 1939. While in Buckhannon he served as president of the Kiwanis Club and was a Mason. Survivors other than his widow include five children, Mrs. Grover Stemple, of Oakland,Md.; Paul Workman, of Clendenin; Mrs. T.E. Holderby, of Huntington; Mrs. Frank Campbell, of Hollidays Cove, and Mrs. William C. Manser, of Buckhannon. Three daughters are deceased. Eight grandsons, one granddaughter, and two great grandsons survive along with two brothers, Hugh B. Workman and Harry Workman, both of Huntington, and two sisters, Mrs. Julia Smith, of Huntington, and Mrs. John Parks, of Seattle, Wash. Funeral Services were conducted in the First Methodist Church, Saturday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock with the Rev.Dr. Hugh E. Kelso, Buckhannon District superintendent of Methodist Churches; Dr. Wallace B. Fleming, the Rev. Dr. J. W. Engle, and the Rev. Dr. C. G. Stater, officiating. Interment was in the Heavener Cemetary. Pallbearers were, Robert Stemple, Donald Stemple, and William Stemple, all of Oakland,Md; Richard Workman, of Clendenin, and WIlliam C. Manser Jr. of Buckhannon, all grandsons, and a nephew, Floyd Workman of Huntington. Honorary pallbearers included Dr. Joseph Warren Broyles, Dr. Nicoli Di Stefano, the Rev. K. Logan Barnes, the Rev. Clyde H. Barkus, the Rev. N.L. Chevront, the Rev. J.R. Chevront, Dr. Ralph C. Brown, Dr. L.H. Chrisman, the Rev. S.B. Cunningham, Dr. L.S. Grose, the Rev. Ross Linger, the Rev. Otis Linger, Dr. M. C. Miles, the Rev. I.F. Peters, Dr. James E. Scott, the Rev. Minor Sprague, the Rev. A.T. Stewart, the Rev. George C. Stratton, the Rev. H. S. Myerly, the Rev. M. Logan, the Rev. C.G. Spellman, the Rev. William Simons, the Rev. Ralph T. McCord, the Rev. Dr. Knight and the Rev. G.D. Griffin.
