Esta was the widow of Willard C. Dodrill and was the first woman sheriff to be elected in the state of West Virginia. She served her county of Webster from January 1961 to December 1964. She passed to her eternal reward on March 27, 1998, the day of her 96th birthday. She is buried beside her husband at the Lower Point Mountain Community Church on Point Mountain.
