Mr. Merritt was born in Greene County, Pennsylvania, on November 30, 1828. In 1850, he was married to Miss Elizabeth Charnock and to this union were five children, three of whom are still living. In 1861 Mr. and Mrs. Merritt came over from Pennsylvania to this state, purchasing a farm near Vincent, Wetzel County, on what is known as Chizel Finger Ridge, where he has resided ever since. For thirty five years he has been an active member of the United Brethern Church, and was well known in Tyler and Wetzel counties. During the past winter his health was very good until a few days before his death when he took a severe attack of pneumonia and passed away just after midnight on Friday night. The funeral services were conducted by Rev. Bauman. The internment was at Mt. Olive cemetery near Vincent. Besides his children, he is survived by one sister, Mrs. Rachel Toner, of Bethany, W. Va.
