He was the son of James Drum Echols and Elizabeth Whitsell (daughter of Adam Coffield and Ruth Wetzel). He was a farmer. He moved to Marshall County, WV in 1850 and married his wife Sarah Elizabeth Coffield November 15, 1854. While living in Marshall County George and his wife had nine children. In 1871, George moved with his family to Wood County, and lived in the Steele District. This turned out to be ill fate for George, because he was murdered there in 1872 by a Mr. Houstetler. The story was passed down that the neighbor was angry about a fence being built by George to keep his wife Sarah at home in his own yard. This so angered Mr. Houstetler that on Dec. 27, 1872 he attacked George with an axe. George died and was buried at Buckley's Chapel Cemetery near Belleville. He was 42 years, 4 months, and 6 days old. George's widow Sarah continued to live in the Steele District and saw all her children marry in Wood County. The first child of George was Ruth Amanda Echols. Ruth was born in 1855. She marred Samuel Thompson and died in Elm Grove, WV in 1932. John William Echols was born 10-6-1856. Absalom Marion Echols was born in 1859 and married Dec. 5, 1880 to Henrietta Anderson (whose mother was a Cherokee Indian named Acky) Dec. 5, 1889. From the diaries of Fern Harmon, Red Bluff, California page 88- Ernest's father Absalom was a farmer, always faithful to his church, and was a hard worker all his life. In Nov. 1900, Absalom and Henrietta with all their eleven children and relatives, 45 in all, chartered a passenger train and moved from Bellville, Wood County, WV to Le Roy, Illinois. Ernest's mother "Henrietta" was a beautiful lady, lovely curly dark hair and blue eyes. She was a devout christian and was a real prayer warrior, she was a soft spoken lady, always good and kind. Absalom died 7-20-1940 in Red Bluff, California where he is buried in the Oak Hill Cemetery. The next child of George and Sarah was born in 1861 and named James Monroe Echols. Mary M. Echols was born in 1869 and she married Alfred Hicks. She lived her life in Greenfield, Ohio. Martha Ann Echols was born September 14, 1871. She married Henry Calvin Bowers October 29, 1889 in Hocking County, Ohio. She moved to Linton, Indianna where she raised her family. She died June 4, 1948 and is buried in the Fairview Cemetery there. After the murder of George a change in spelling of the surname Echols occurred. The children began using the spelling Eckels and through the years it has further been changed to Eckles, depending on the preference of each family. The descendants of George and Sarah Echols stretch across the United States from their start in Wood County, WV to as far as Anchorage, Alaska. Many were very successful farmers and businessmen. There has also been a legacy of tragedy in the family. Both George and his son James were murdered. Two grandchildren of son John William committed suicide. A great great grandchild was accused of committing the murder of his wife in the 1980's. And most recently it is believed that a great great grandchild of son George Garrett Eckels was killed in the Oklahoma City Bombing in the day care facility on that fateful day. Much genealogical information has been gathered on this family, with some even published and in the Chicago Library. I am a descendant of John William Eckels and would be willing to share this information with others interested in researching this family. I am a teacher, and genealogy is my hobby.
