In the name of God Amen I John Gard, being in state of mind and health do make this to be my last will and testament therof first I will and bequeath to my wife ann Gard the plantation I now live on together with the movable property as long as she remains my widow. I also will and bequeath unto my sons Samuel Gard, Nathan Gard, Ephraigm Gard, Lot Gard John Gard, Richard Gard, and Jeremiah Gard, the plantation I now live on after the death of my wife Nancy Gard, I also will and bequeath unto my daughter Hannah Arnold one dollar, also will and bequeath unto my daughter Rachael William one dollar and I also will and bequeath unto my daughter Elizabeth Gard and Kesiah Gard all the movable property belonging to me after the death of my wife Nancy Gard. I also appoint my wife Nancy Gard to be executrix of my estate and to dispose of as much of the movable property as will satisfy and pay my just debts. I John Man of the County of Wood and State of Virginia being of sound disposing mind but weak in Body do make this my last Will and Testament. First. It is my will and desire that all my just debts be paid. Second. I will to my Daughter Polly Pharsons my riding Horse over and above the distributive share herein after mentioned. Thirdly. It is my will and desire that my personal property (the Horse aforementioned excepted) be sold by Executor herein after mentioned and the Money arising from be equally divided among all my Children. Forthly. I do appoint my Son-in-law Henry Pharson the Sole Executor of this my last Will and Testament. I, William Mann of Parkersburg, Wood County, in the State of Virginia, in view of that event to which all mortals must inevitably come, and to which I feel that I am rapidly tending; yet being in a sound disposing mind and memory, feel and believe it to be my duty to make such disposition of the property which it has pleased God to bless me with, as to me seems just and right, do hereby make ordain, publish and declare this to be my last Will and Testament (hereby revoking all other wills made by me) as follows: Item 1st. It is my will and desire that all my just debts and funeral expenses be paid and for that purpose I hereby direct my Executors herein after named to proceed to settle up my estate and collect the debts due to me, as speedily as they can, having a regard to the interest of my estate. Item 2nd. After all my debts are paid, the balance of my personal property, then remaining on hand, I give to my beloved wife Alcinda Frances, and to my children William Henry and Virginia share and share alike. Item 3rd. The uses, rents and income arising from my real estate, I hereby will and devise to my said wife and children share and share alike, for their support and maintainance, and the education of my children and the remainder in fee, of said real estate, from and after the death of my said wife; I will and devise to my said children their heirs and assigns forever - subject however to the condition and provision; namely that should it be deemed best, by any Executors hereinafter named, to make sale of that part of my real estate, known as the United States Hotel; after consulting with my friends and relations; I hereby authorise and empower them to do so, and to sell the same, on such time and credit as will promote the interest of my Estate and to make, execute and acknowledge good and sufficient deed or deeds to the purchaser or purchasers thereof, retaining and holding a lien on the said property until the purchase money thereof, for the same is fully paid and the proceeds of the sale, I direct my said Executors to invest in such other real estate, as will produce annually good rents or profits to be paid to my wife and children as aforesaid, and the same to be held in fee, in remainder, by my said children from and after the death of my said wife, as the other real estate is devised to them and held by them, their heirs and assigns forever. Item 4th. I hereby nominate, constitute and appoint my friend Mr. Daniel R. Neal, and my brother Zachariah Mann, my executors of this my last Will and Testament with full power to carry out all its provisions. Also, I further appoint them, Guardian or Trustee of my said children to carry out all the provisions, I have made for their support, maintainance and education. In Testimony whereof I hereto set my hand and seal at Parkersburg Virginia this twenty first day of September in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and fifty four (1854). W.
