According to a note from my mother, Luther quit farming in 1919, the year that Hannah died. I do not have the name of the newspaper, only a photocopy of the obituary clipping. I hope this information is useful to you. Garrett Austin Rowley OBITUARY Mrs. Hannah V. Rose On June 12, 1919, the home of our friend and neighbor, L. P. B. Rose, was broken up by the death of his wife, Hannah V. Rose. Mrs. Rose had been in failing health for several months, and a trip to Baltimore, where specialists were consulted, revealed to the family the fact that her case had passed beyond the skill of the medical profession, and all they could do was to recommend her return home where kind friends ministered to her wants till she passed beyond the reach of mortal aid. She was 61 years 4 months and 14 days old, and was married to L. P. B. Rose, May 17, 1887. They were parents of eight children, two of whom had preceded her to the land of rest. Those living are: Ernest C. Rose of Curtin; Virgil A. Rose of Erle, Pa.; Maude M. Mace of Hacker Valley, Lulu R. Mace of Boone county, and Herma V. and Amy E. Rose, who are teaching school. All the children but one have been school teachers, thus following the example of their mother who was a successful teacher before them. Mrs. Rose was a devoted Christian lady and it was a pleasure to join her in conversation on the Bible, for she loved that good Book and made it her constant companion in seeking after knowledge of the higher life. She believed its teachings and endeavored to fashion her life after its precepts. She thought deeply on its philosophy and could converse with interest in her own original way on passages hard of understanding. When 16 years of age she joined the Church of the Disciples and lived consistently in that church till fifteen years ago when she and her husband both joined the Sand Run Baptist Church where she continued to live the faithful Christian life among her neighbors and friends. The home has been broken up, and the children and Mr. Rose are no longer there, but the fond memory of the old hearthstone where this godly woman used to direct the outgoings and incomings of her children will still follow them wheresoe're they go, and they will feel in the sober reflections of life that their best friend is just a few steps ahead, calling them on and up. Mrs. Rose, besides her immediate family, also leaves four sisters and one brother, namely W. H. Rice, Sarah Jane Shriver, Mariah Carpenter, Roxana Carpenter and Mary Rose. Her friends were limited only by the circle of her acquaintances. She was a good neighbor, kind, thoughtful of the needs of others, and ever stood ready to minister to the wants of those about her. She felt that the best service one could give to the world was to do the very best you can in the place you have been called to fill, be it large or small, either in public life or in the precincts of home. She took a lively interest in public affairs and kept posted on the great world events that have been passing in such rapid strides in recent years. She has written several articles that show the trend of a thoughtful, earnest mind. Her children will all do well to emulate her life as it was daily lived before them and the world as an open book to be read by all who knew her. H. H. Der Herma I shall now try to answer your letter which I rec'd. not long ago would have answered sooner but was very busy & have neglected to write. We are having bad weather now snowing & blowing today not so very cold 22o above zero but has been real cold 14o below zero once since you were here. Virgil is at home now he came up last Tuesday a week. he was working with the carpenter crew and the weather got too bad for them to work. Minnie White and Elliott Hickiman were married not long ago. Susie Handschumaker and Evert Cogar were married New Years Day. Rev. D. B. Lloyd married them. We saw him going back to W. S. about 3 o'clock that evening. Pa has been at Webster Springs once since you were here he took over some apples & butter apples are $1.00 per bu. butter is 80 cts per lb. We have sold 47 heads of cabbage at Bolair Store at 3( cts per lb. which amounted to $12.48 Pa is talking about taking some more over tomorrow if the weather isn't too bad. We killed a hog last week and Virgil has killed two rabbits & two squirrels so you see we are having fresh meat to eat. I made sausage and canned most of it. I washed some wool and have been making the old wheel hum every day I am going to make some more blankets I will have to hustle up or I won't have two blankets a piece for the kids if they keep going at the same rate that they have been or faster. Kess (?) Taylor died Sunday morning and they say his father, Harry Taylor, is very bad Doctor says he has Pneumonia Fever Lucy Rice went over to Andrew Rice's the first of this month & Mrs. Annis Kiernan went to Morgan Town to stay with her son Charley Kiernan. I got a letter from Amy the other day she sent me a hankerchief for a present. Pa said to ask you if Mr. Tom Carpenter got The Toledo Blade yet. Well it is almost 5 o'clock I will have to quit writing and go and milk the cows and do up the work. I enclose a card that came to Bolair for you after you left. Write soon. Lovingly Yours. Hannah V. Rose ===================================== Letter #4, Postmarked February 7, 1918, WV Sent to Miss Herma Rose, Kovan, WV Bolair, W. Va. Feb 7. 1918 Dear Herma I rec'd. your letter yesterday. We got Harry Townsend to go after our mail We haven't had any mail for over two weeks. Bowers has been sick ever since January 22 has not been out of the house since then but is about well now. I have been doing all the work in door & out. Virgil only staid a week when he was here last but has come back again to day. It has been so Icy I could hardly stand up. Mrs. Bell fell last Saturday & hurt her back & side & had to have the doctor. It has been pretty cold. therm. registered 6 degrees below zero Tuesday morning but is warm now and I hope it will not be so cold here after. This has been an exceeding cold winter and I'm sorry you have to freeze for want of good coal. Some people in the U.S. have frozen to death this winter on the account of not having any fuel. Speak to the trustees about fuel in time for them to get it before it's all gone. Then if they don't get it, You stay there at your boarding place and go to the School house every morning (to be taught) and if there is no fuel there go back to your boarding and you can get your pay just the same as if you had taught. You ask the trustees to get fuel and don't listen to other people's talk surely one of the trustees will see that fuel is furnished. You can get Monday if you teach it. If you meant Mon. before Xmas or New Year You will have to teach it. You get nothing but legal holidays. your school month cosists of 20 day and if you have two legal holidays in that month you have to teach only 18 days. Do the best you know how and don't be saying things about any one it does no good to use so much chin music. Write as soon as you get this and let us know how you are getting along. H. V. Rose. ===================================== Letter #5, Postmarked August 25, 1919, WV Sent to Miss Herma Rose, Bolair, Webster Co., WV Lima, W Va Aug. 24th, 1919.
