Biography Of Serrilda Olida Cook Elkins

Serrilda Olida Cook was born October 19,1856 in Oceana, Wyoming 
County, West Virginia.

She is the GG-Granddaughter of John Cook the 1st permanent settler 
of present day Wyoming County West Virginia.

Her parents are Thomas G. Cook and Margaret Peggy Brooks .
Paternal Grandparents are William Doby Cook and Chloe Bailey
Maternal Grandparents are William Richard Brooks and Eleanor 
Nellie Cook

She was Baptized on Saturday July 14,1877 by W.H.H. Cook in 
Oceana,WV.

She married George F. Elkins  s/o Thomas Elkins and Virginia 
Jensey Brown January 14,1876 in Oceana, Wyoming County, West 
Virginia . 

 
And to this marriage their children are as follows:

Serrilda Cook Elkins lived 92 years in Oceana she married and 
raised her children on the same farm she was raised on.
Part of that farm it is located where the now Oceana Schools 
are and above there it is Elkins Cove on Circle Drive.

I can still see my maternal Great -Grandmother Serrilda Olida 
Cook Elkins walking with her apron and her little corn cob pipe, 
as she came out to gather kindling to build her fire in her wood 
cook stove she would turn up the end of her apron to hold her 
kindling so she could carry it back to the house.
As I just lived a little way around the hill from her we were 
there a lot.

She would take us to church with her as she was a member of the 
Delilah Chapel Church then it was Hatcher now present day it is 
all included in Oceana and she would have 3 or 4 of her G-
Grandchildren taking us to church on Sundays , I can still 
remember walking to Hatcher with her  and coming home we walked 
by where the now Oceana High School and The Oceana Medical 
Center are today.
She was always kind and gentle to us she truly was a good 
Christian lady and she loved children . 
She died on February 24,1948 at her home and she is buried in 
the Chambers/ Cook/Elkins family  Cemetery  on Route 10 in 
Oceana ,Wyoming County ,West Virginia .
