Biography of Ali "Coon" Belcher - Wyoming Co. WV Ali “Coon” Belcher was born December 17, 1839 in Pike Couny, Kentucky. He was the son of Bartley and Rachel Ramey Belcher. Ali married Lucinda Mullens/ Baker on January 21, 1860 in Wyoming County, WV. Lucinda “Cindy” was the daughter of Jane Baker. Ali’s brother Richard Belcher married Lucinda’s sister Louisa Mullens. Ali moved his family to Kanawha County, WV sometime after 1870. Lucinda died sometime around 1890, probably near Falling Rock, Kanawha County, WV. Ali married his second wife Jester Milam Carr, on June 29, 1893 in Nicholas County, WV. They lived in Webster County, WV until Ali’s death in the fall of 1925. Ali was a private in the Confederate army during the Civil War. He enlisted on May 18, 1863 in Company C, 45th Battalion Virginia Infantry, under the command of Captain R. Cook. Two of Ali’s brothers, Abram and George, also served in Company C. Ali’s service record found at the National Archives is brief. It is dated April 1, 1864 and notes that Ali has been absent without leave since December 15, 1863. However, it is to be noted that in the book “45th Battalion Virginia Infantry: Smith and Counts Battalions of Partisan Rangers” by Jeffrey Weaver, that the writer pointed out that an unpopular move back into Tazewell County, Virginia inspired several men to desert at that time, including Ali’s two brothers. Mr. Weaver further stated that a soldier was listed as absence without leave, when in fact he was sick or on deatached service somewhere else. Children of Ali and Lucinda were: 1. John Henry born: April 13, 1862 in Wyoming County and died May 1, 1927 in Kanawha County, WV. He married I. Melinda King , August 1, 1883 in Clay Co., WV. II. S.A. Elswick, September 15, 1891 in Kanawha C., WV. 2. Nancy Jane born: abt 1865, in Wyoming County and died about 1896. She married William Henry Newsome October 2, 1881 in Kanawha Co., WV. 3. William Jasper “Jab” Belcher was born July 8, 1866 in Guyan River, Wyoming Co. He married Lydia King, daughter of Samuel and Elizabeth Vaughan KIng. 4. Mary E. Belcher born March 1869, in Wyoming Co. She married Noah L. Vanover October 22, 1887, in Dickerson Co., Virginia. 5. George Washington Belcher born about March 1872. He married Mary E. Mullens, DEcember 24, 1892 in Kanawha County, Wv. 6. Rebecca M. “Becky” born abt 1873, and died February 9, 1958. She married I. Sherwood Mullins May 18, 1891 in Clay Co., Wv. II. Jacob “Uncle Jake” Cantrell, May 5, 1901 in Kanawha Co. 7. Mose Harrison “Grandsir” born June 21, 1875 in Sandy, Kanawha Co. and died November 28, 1959 in Ronceverte, Greenbrier Co., WV. He married Adeline Ruth King May 25, 1899 in Roane Co., WV. She was the daughter of Samuel and Elizabeth Vaughan King. 8. Joseph Bartley “Bart” born abt Feb 29, 1880. He married I. Melissa Joanna King, daughter of Samuel and Elizabeth Vaughan King. II. Arlie L. Gibson on June 5, 1913. Bart was a Primitive Baptist preacher for many years. By Gregory Belcher.
