R. Brooke, the democratic candidate for county clerk, was born at Newark, Lieking County, Ohio, in December 1860. He received a thorough common school education in his native town, finishing his high school course in 1878. He entered the employ of the Baltimore & Ohio railroad the following yea in the office of the car service department, and became the head of that office in 1881, with the title of car recorder of the trans-Ohio divisions, the territory of the office covering all lines of the B. & O. west of the Ohio river. This position he filled with credit for about a year, when the office was abandoned, and the records afterwards were kept at Baltimore, Md. In 1882, Mr. Brooke moved with his family to Minneapolis, Minn., where his first position was that of assistant cashier in the joint office of the St. P., M. & M. (Great Northern) and the Northern Pacific railroads. For the five years following he was night agent at the Minnesota transer, where he conducted the night business of the twelve railroads that center there. This position required a man with indomitable energy, and this ?? not lacking in our present candidate for county clerk. His services ended at that point with the strike of 1894, and for the next three years was employed in the local freight office of the M. & St. L. railway, one of the busiest freight offices in the city. From 1897 to 1902 fouond him in the auditor's office of the M. St. P. & S. S. M. (Soo? line), in charge of the passenger department. His railroad experience terminated in the latter year, until he came to Wyoming in 1906. The intervening time was filled by a varied experience in commercial lines. Mr. Brooke holds personal recommendations from practically all of his employers, from 1897 to date, all of which speak of him in the highest terms, as a man of excellent habits and ability far beyond the average. The various lines of work include employment with leading firms of Minneapolis, filling positions of honor and trust, and are as follows: Pittsburg Coal Co., statistician. Farmers and Mechanices Savings Bank, bookkeeper. Becus - Brooks Lumber Co., book keeper. Deer & Webber Co., in charge billing department. Treasurer's office Hennepin County, apportionment clerk. In addition to the above, and as side position, he was for about ten years, secretary ??? fraternal order, looking after that end of the business for a lodge whose membership grew during that time from about 20 to over 690. In 1908 Mr. Brooke came to Gillette, as agent at this station, and during that year and part of 1909 served the public faithfully, and while there he made many lasting friendships. Since then he has been temporarioly employed at the Bank of Gillette, and during the last year we find him filling the position of city marshall, and while he was not heavy on the "rough and tumble" he handled the office with deplomacy and thereby saved the city considerable expense. While this record shows a great many changes in occupation, it gives him a general knowledge of office work, possessed by few, and has a congenial disposition that will benefit him to deal with the public in the trying position to which he aspires, that of county clerk.
