We came across on a big ship and it was quite a trip. We were ten days coming across. I thought I would get sick, and I did for a couple of days I was pretty dizzy but I got over it and felt fine the rest of the trip. We sure fed fine coming across as the ship was fine, and the mess hall was the finest place on the ship. I think the ship was nine hundred and fourty feet long. It was a large one any way, and we had a fine trip. We are in England for a few days at an American rest camp. We will only be here a short time, but we are in barrocks and it is a fine camp. Sometimes I got pretty hungry. We had turkey on Sunday, and again today but we did not get very much. It tasted pretty good, but most anything tastes good to a fellow in the army. The ocean was pretty rough for two or three days on our trip, but most of the way it was pretty smooth. I worked quite a bit of the way on the ship. They had a lot of us on permanent detail and we carried empty boxes and barrels down into the coal room and broke them up for kindling then we had to carry all of the slop and garbage up and dumped it overboard. We would carry it up in the day time and dump it overboard after dark. We have to be pretty careful what we write as the mail is censured. I suppose it will be quite a while before I get an answer. There were a lot of nurses came over with us. I o not know how many soldiers there were. We had only two meals a day on the ship. We have a band in our company so we have some music once in a while. We had a big snow storm just be- we left[sic]. There was about a foot and a half. It was very cold and we had to break our road when we left. We had our packs on and had to stop and rest five or six times going to the train. We were up all night too, then when we got to the depot we had to wait two hours for a train. We are seeing and having lots of soldiers hard luck. Some nights we get no sleep at all. We roed in those old time rail- road cars coming from the ship to where we are now. They are short coaches and have two seats facing each other and they hae a partition in two seats in a place. In the cars they have a door on each side of those little petitioned places and they seat eight in each stall. I do not know how the trainmen get back and fourth. I guess they have to run back and forth when the train stops. They have a door for each little stall and one has to get in from the outside as there are no isles through the cars. It is pretty cold her today. There is no snow on the ground though. It is two or three miles from the town to camp. I do not know the name of the town, but it doesn't make any difference, for if I knew I would not write it as they are pretty strict about telling where we are. I think it is a good idea too because it would give the Germans a chance to find out lots of things. Well I hope the wara will close before I have to go in the trenches, because I don't thing there is much chance of getting out alive, but we cannot tell what might happen. We may get to come back home again. I hope so, as I have sure missed home a great many times since I left. Well I guess this is all for this time. With love to all, Your son, Carl Cook Additional Comments: "Big Piney Examiner Thur Sep 19, 1918 pg 7 Brief News Notes Carl J. Cook, of Gillette, is among the killed in action."
