(The 1900 census says birth was July 1888 and a social security listing shows Mary Lay (born July 22, 1886, died May 1964 California). Her siblings were: Ada Calvert (1877-1970); Lycurgus Kirk Calvert Jr (1879-1955); Lydia Orilla Calvert (1881- 1918); Walter Calvert (1884-1900); Charles Frederick (1889-1903); Roscoe C Calvert (1893-1908) and Lloyd Calvert (1896-1963). Found Mary Calvert in the 1900 census living at Election District # 15, Carbon, Wyoming with her parents: Lyconeus Calvert 53 (born August 1846 in Missouri), Viola D Calvert 40 (born July 1859 California), Kirk Calvert 20 (born November 1879 WY, range rider), Lydia Orilla Keeler 17 (daughter, born December 1881 WY with 1 child that is 1 year old), Walter Calvert 16 (son born March 1884 at WY, at school), Mary Calvert 11 (daughter born July 1888 at WY, at school), Charles F Calvert 10 (born October 1889 in Wyoming, at school), Roscoe C Calvert 6 (born July 1893 at Colorado), Lloyd Calvert 3 (born June 1896 at WY), Frank L Keeler 1 (born March 1899 Utah, grandson, Lydia's son), Charles B Boyce 30 (son-in-law, born September 1869 California, married 4 years, farmer), Ada Boyce 22 (daughter born December 1877 WY), Joseph S Clarke 30 (employee, mechanical engineer, born August 1869 Ohio). Mary Calvert met a man named Will "Mac" McGinnis who was working on her father's ranch as a hired man. His name at that time was an alias for his real name, William Ellsworth (Elsa or Elzy) Lay (who was born November 25, 1868 (or about 1870) at Mount Pleasant, Ohio and died November 10, 1934 at Los Angeles, California; buried at Forest Lawn, Glendale, California). Some research suggest that Mary and Elzy "eloped" without her parent's approval, that is possible. Found an entry in the Thermopolis, Wyoming marriage record #14 for April 03, 1909, page 1: CALVERT-McGINNISS- Mr. W. H. McGinniss and Miss Mary Culvert (should be Calvert) were united in marriage Saturday evening, March 27, 1909, at the residence of Mr. and Mrs. J. K Holladay, by Justice J. W. Calloway. Mary and William McGinnis (aka Elzy Lay) had 2 children: James Walter Lay (born February 22, 1910 Wyoming, died January 10, 1969 San Diego, California) and Mary Lucille Lay (born January 23, 1912 Wyoming, married Ralph Howard Morgan (1902-1985), died May 20, 2009 Los Angeles, California). Found the couple in the 1910 census living at Thermopolis, Fremont, Wyoming: William H McGinnis 40, Mary McGinnis 23, baby male McGinnis 2/12 (2 months). Ranching. (Family still using the alias surname McGinnis) Found in the 1920 census living at Shoshonee, Fremont, Wyoming: William E Lay 50, Mary Lay 32, James Lay 10, Lucille Lay 8. William working as an oil promoter. Found Mary and Elzy's daughter in the 1930 census living at Los Angeles, California: Mary Lucille Lay, age 18, living at a boarding house with Ada Jones (who would be a cousin), age 19. Found their son in the 1930 census at Calexico, Imperial California: James Lay, age 20, renting a room and working as a clerk at a post office. Not 100% sure but believe Mary Calvert Lay died May 24, 1964 at Los Angeles, California and is buried beside Elzy Lay at the Forest Lawn Cemetery, Glendale, Los Angeles, California. Additional Comments: Note: Censuses transcribed as found, obvious spelling errors not corrected.) There are many biographies or stories written about Elzy Lay and his life. There are also many discrepancies on the facts. Conclude he was first married in 1896 to a Matilda Maude Davis (born November 15, 1874 Utah, died July 22, 1859 Utah). They had one daughter, Marvel Matilda Lay (born August 6, 1897 Utah, died November 1983 Utah.) Maude divorced Elzy and raised their daughter. Some of the more extensive bios are at: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elzy_Lay - Wikipedia - Elzy Lay biography and at http://www.wjdesigns.com/lzlay/name.html - "New Mexico Prisoner # 1348 by Karen Holiday Tanner and John D Tanner, Jr. A book was also written about Elzy Lay by his grandson and is available for purchase at museums in Wyoming and Utah.
