November 21, 1955, Monday, p 1. Chief Justice of Wyoming Succumbs Death Follows Injury Suffered in Fall at Home Chief Justice William A. Riner, a member of the Wyoming Supreme Court for 27 years, died Sunday. He was 77. Riner, born in Greene, Iowa, June 28, 1878, died at 5:30 p.m., two weeks after he had been hospitalized for a broken hip suffered in a fall at his home Death was said to have resulted from complications arising from the hip injury. Riner was graduated from the University of Southern California in 1899 and received his law degree from the University of Michigan in 1902. The same year he briefly practiced in Lansing, Mich., and then moved to Cheyenne. He was appointed Cheyenne city attorney in 1908 and served in that capacity until 1911 when he was named U.S. district attorney for Wyoming, a post he held until 1912. In 1922, Riner was appointed district court judge and elected in that office the same year, serving until 1928, when he was appointed to the Wyoming Supreme Court to fill the vacancy created by the death of Justice Charles M. Potter. Appointed Jan. 10, 1928, Riner served continuously on the high tribunal until his death. The position of chief justice of the courts was held many times by Riner during his service on the Supreme Court as the position is rotated every three years among the three court justices. Survivors include a son, William R. Riner, Jr. of Cheyenne, and daughter, living in Denver. Services for Riner are pending. The vacancy created by his death will be filled by appointment by Gov. Milward L. Simpson until the 1956 general election, when a new justice will be chosen to serve out Riner’s term ending Jan. 1, 1959.
