Park County, Wyoming - FORT YELLOWSTONE ARMY CEMETERY Fort Yellowstone Army Cemetery, Mammoth, Hot Springs Area, Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming. Made available to The Tombstone Project by George Edison Creel - This old cemetery is located adjacent to the present-day (June 2000) concessionaire horse stables. The data contained here is extracted, mostly verbatim, from Appendix 3 of the book, Death In Yellowstone by Lee H. Whittlesey, The Court Wayne Press, Boulder CO, 1995. Used by permission of the author. Lee H. Whitlesey is the historical archivist at Yellowstone National Park. Lee H. Whittlesey states in Appendix 3 that much of the data is from the document "Record of Interments at the Post Cemetery, Fort Yellowstone", Item 155, YNP Archives. This graveyard was the site of 57 or 58 burials, from 1888 to 1957. They are U.S. Army soldiers and members of their families and civilian employees of the U.S. Army and members of their families. Twenty of the graves were moved to the Little Bighorn Battlefield near Crow Agency, Montana, on July 4-5, 1917. The data herein is from the official records of interments. I visited the cemetery in June, 2000, and many of the markers were missing. though many are still in good shape and legible. Most are marble of the military issue type. The cemetery is overgrown and is not receiving care as other military cemeteries. In the book cited above, there is a map showing burial locations in reference to the fence around the cemetery. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- AUDITTO, Nellie d.
