Wright Lucinda, the eldest child of Gabriel and Elizabeth Watt, was born in the fall of 1806 at a settlement on Drakes Fork, a tributary of the Green River in south-central Kentucky. On December 22, 1824, Lucinda married James Birchfield in Warren County, Kentucky. Around 1825 they moved west to the prairies of McLean County, Illinois, where three children were born: Elizabeth, Julia and Martha. James Birchfield probably died during the winter of 1835-36. Lucinda married Thomas Huston Wright on August 4, 1836. From this marriage came four children: John, Elmyra, Silas, and Elijah. In September 1852 Thomas and Lucinda Wright sold their 171-acre farm and on March 15, 1853, together with their children--they began the overland journey to Oregon. Here, on the Sublette Cutoff, Lucinda Birchfield Wright, age 47, died on June 25, 1853. The cause of death is unknown. Her nephew, John G. Wright, recalled the burial: ""Uncle Huston's wife died on the Green River desert and was buried at the side of the road. I shall never forget how desolate we felt as we hitched up the oxen and pulled out, leaving the freshly broken earth by the side of the Old Oregon Trail as the only visible sign that one of our number had finished the journey, while we must still travel on. There were four families of us that stopped to bury my aunt, in a blanket in a shallow grave, with a few feet of earth and the wide sky over her."" The Wright wagon train arrived at Salem, Oregon, on September 15, 1853. Thomas H. Wright became a cattle buyer. He married Eliza Stutzman, on February 21, 1869. Nephew John G. Wright became a prominent citizen serving two terms as mayor of Salem and as representative for Marion County in the Oregon State Legislature. A wooden headboard, believed to be the original grave marker, was found in 1961. It is now on display at the Museum of the Mountain Man in Pinedale, Wyoming.
